Wondrous Things

Here we are on Thursday, and we head back to Atlanta on Monday. This long, long trip is almost done. The last couple of days have been rather full, and since we're spending today and tomorrow winding down and getting rested for the arduous drive back, I thought I'd spend part of this afternoon on a couple of entries, trying to catch up with myself ( Read more... )

Have you ever gotten a chance to visit the Mütter Museum in Philly? It's got that same antique sort of feel to it. And a wall of trepanned skulls.

Damnit. I just moved from Cambridge (to Philly) and I keep hearing about all these wonderful places I missed out on. I will definitely have to check out the MCZ when I go back for a visit in the Fall.
What is your favorite museum of all time?

What is your favorite museum of all time?

That's a very difficult question to answer. For one thing, it also raises the question of how I'm to define a museum. Are art museums and aquariums included? Anyway, my favourite might be the American Museum of Natural History in NYC, but the MCZ is definitely in my top three.

Both are definitely included. I am ashamed to admit I have never been to the AMNH in NYC, but I am planning a museum trip to NYC in a few weeks, so I shall have to put it on the list.

We didn't reach Cambridge until almost three p.m., so we had only two hours to look at a museum that needs many days to do it justice.

You'll just have to come back . . .

I love the Harvard Museum. I've spent many hours in there with notebook in hand just staring at the specimens. So a book you might want to consider if you don't already have it..."The Rarest of the Rare: stories behind the treasures at the Harvard Museum of Natural History" by Nancy Pick and Mark Sloan.

The magnificant Kronosaurus (with me for scale).

Cool. And a duck-billed platypus, too.

It's an occasional source of embarrassment to me that I work in Boston but almost never spend time in Cambridge. My commute is back home to Natick, so the opposite-directioned Cambridge seldom seems to happen.

I wish I'd had the chance to meet you while you were up North. (I would have gone to Cambridge for that!) I hope the bad things that happened while you were in New England don't discourage you from returning.

Don't worry. Mostly, they're bad things that would have happened to me no matter where I was. It had nothing to do with New England. Well, except for the tourists. Anyway, yes, I will be back.
