Wondrous Things

Here we are on Thursday, and we head back to Atlanta on Monday. This long, long trip is almost done. The last couple of days have been rather full, and since we're spending today and tomorrow winding down and getting rested for the arduous drive back, I thought I'd spend part of this afternoon on a couple of entries, trying to catch up with myself ( Read more... )

Have you ever been to the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philly? I went there for my twenty first birthday a few weeks ago because I love museums. It had tons of lovely dinosaur bones and taxidermied animals in dioramas. I loved it.

They even had a place where you could watch scientists cleaning up bones for display and they were so nice. One guy talked to me for a good fifteen minutes, telling me how bones become fossils. Extremely fascinating.

Yep. I like it quite a lot. I studied some of the mosasaur material in the ANSP collection back in college and also read a paper there during an anuual meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology.

The MCZ looks absolutely brilliant. I love picturing the Kronosaurus lurking in the ocean. You're right, it's magnificent.

I love Natural History Museums. Thank you for luring me to MCZ. I will have to go, obviously.

So, what up with that crazy mosasaur?

I see an upper row of teeth. Then, down below, I see an upper row of teeth.

?

Is this the Choronzonian variety?

I am, of course, a fossil expert. (Well, I'm rapidly becoming a fossil, anyway.)

Nice brass handles, too. Its enemies must have loved those.

Actually, I'm now guessing that's a PILE of mosasaurs -- not A mosasaur. Looks like two big ones, and one puny one mashed in between. Weird.

Love the pictures, by the way. I'm pretty much a lurkie-loo in here, these days, and I confess to not thoroughly reading every post. But, like a kid, I like to riffle through and look at all the pictures, anyway.
