A Whale of a Tale

I was, of course, being excessively ambitious in thinking I could easily do two or three entries today. Here it is 9:03 p.m., and I'm only just beginning the second. Anyway...

On July 29th, trying to take my mind off the nonsense with Penguin and the heartlessness of remaindering, we drove up to New Bedford, Massachusetts, to visit the New BedfordRead more... )

we drove up to New Bedford, Massachusetts, to visit the New Bedford Whaling Museum.

That sounds fantastic. I haven't yet been to that museum, but it's on my list.

(The forecastle photo isn't bad, either.)

You would enjoy it mightily.

I just realized that I've been using their website to do research for one of my stories. Now I really have to visit.

we watched One-Hour Photo, which we'd both somehow managed not to see in theatres but enjoyed a great deal.

I saw One Hour Photo about a year ago on DVD, and I think it remains the best performance Robin Williams has given. It was just haunting.

Holy crap, you were in my town. I was stuck at work AND YOU WERE WITHIN FRELLING WALKING DISTANCE. *headdesk*

Owl and I go to the Fort all the time. She's going to be crestfallen that she missed you two.

And yes. People do love their wedding photos at the Fort.

Thank you, though, for calling my town beautiful. Mark Twain liked it here too. He called our library 'the ideal library.'

Actually, checking the date, I wasn't even at work. I was on vacation, and spending the day whisking one of our kittens back and forth from the spaying/neutering clinic. This, of course, makes it even worse.

You're welcome. It is. And I'm sorry. I did not even know that you and Owl lived in Fairhaven. Perhaps we can make it back over before this trip is done.

If you don't mind me asking, how tall are you? Just curious in regards to the size of the Sperm Whale mandibles.

A bit in excess of six feet. I'd guess those jaws must have been about 13+ feet in length.

Fuck I love Blood Meridian. It was my introduction to McCarthy and it's one of the few books I finished and immediately started right back at the beginning. Sutree cemented the love affair, one long and beautiful description of the degenerates and dirtbags that choose to live in a shanty town alongside the Tenessee River.
