Crouch, Touch, Pause, Engage

New Zealand just won the rugby world cup. By one point over France. It's hard to explain to those Americanish people among you what a big deal that is to New Zealand (we last won in 1987, but still kind of think of it as some kind of bizarre national birthright). Right now it's half past eleven in the evening and there are youths driving around ( Read more... )

rugger, ugh, national obsession, we are the champions apparently

Yay NZ - I'm just glad Australia wasn't in the final at all! I know exactly what you mean about hating that you care.

It was pretty exciting. And conflicting! I'm happy for the players though, they did play a good set of games, and are getting lots of deserved praise today!

I am from Melbourne. I know not this rugby of which you speak ;)

My city is currently all about the horses!

Aha, it's the game when the ball bounces funny and then they all jump on each other. ;-)

Melbourne is my favorite. There must be so many expat NZers there, now, it's like the aspirational city for people from Christchurch who are into the arts. Like Americans head for LA, or something.

All negativity SHOULD be ignored, they did very well, and there's been a sunny kind of holiday today with everyone happy.
I loved seeing Ritchie McCaw afterwards, looking so shagged. Talk about the weight of the expectations of four million people on his shoulders!

:-)

Lol, you are conflicted y/y? I hear you, I do and I'm so happy for the team - can you imagine the pressure they were under. The Captn looked like he was going to drop dead at the end. And as you say, women everywhere in NZ will breathe a sigh of relief.

Ritchie McCaw is such a NZ kind of hero, he DID look tired, didn't he? He had a sore foot through the whole thing, apparently. Hell of a nice guy as well.

I could have probably kicked the Prime Minister in the nuts though. But that's just me!

I didn't watch in the end, I'm surprised it went down to the wire like that - those Frenchies must be the jammiest team ever (except they didn't quite manage to win). I was secretly supporting Wales because they sing the best - I'd have loved to have gone to the Millennium stadium for the semi final - I mean, they had c68k people in there to watch a big screen, a bigger crowd than at the actual match!
Your nation needs to diversify its sports though, hanging everything onto Rugby Union is a bit crazycakes (though maybe not as crazy as cupcakes with little beating hearts in them...?)
Still, it is nice that a whole nation will be happy tomorrow, the whole of France would barely have noticed if they'd won.

Crazycakes with little beating hearts FTW. It may be some days before I can eat cupcakes, after that. EW EW EW.
It was an AGONIZING game. But they hung on. I'm feeling a little bit more happy about it today, but it was a happy holiday!
