New Zealand just won the rugby world cup. By one point over France. It's hard to explain to those Americanish people among you what a big deal that is to New Zealand (we last won in 1987, but still kind of think of it as some kind of bizarre national birthright). Right now it's half past eleven in the evening and there are youths driving around ( Read more... )

rugger, ugh, national obsession, we are the champions apparently

Well, that's nice. I was wondering who'd won. Talking to a friend about it yesterday and we both came down on the side of "don't personally care, know lots of people will be happy so essentially hoping for an All Blacks win" and yeah, the domestic violence topic came up in that conversation as well. A win seems like a relief to that worry, though the drunken celebrations probably still lead to some anyway. Either way, I had plans to line up a donation to Women's Refuge today, so that's still gonna happen.

I remember friends wearing black arm bands etc when France beat the ABs back in the early 2000s. Kinda strange the things that make people mourn when other stuff (like, say, a disaster with actual death) doesn't. Monkeysphere issues, I s'pose.

IDK. I don't so much care as I care that people care. Maybe we can all get back to the election now :).

Man, I could have punched John Key in the face, being all smarmy at the awards ceremony. Actually if I saw him today, I'd still punch him. Rugby makes no nevermind on that instance.

So, I'm behind on LJ, but I wanted to comment on this because I know EXACTLY what you mean. For Canadians, it's hockey. I could care less about hockey. But when we were in the Olympic gold medal match against the U.S.? And won? Yeah, exact same thing. It's this weirdo 'Hockey is Canada's game!' crap and even though I didn't want to care, I was also secretly happy we won.
