YEAH. OKAY. Tessa. Read this. THAT IS MY LEGIT PERSONAL CANON FOR TESSA AND JULIET, TRUE STORY.
Rewatch the episode with Giles in S1 for the ultimate omgwtf with regards to Tom. Shit technically started then.
re: Ruth; I cannot honestly speak until you've seen S4. So I will say, only: YES. I KNEW YOU WOULD LIKE RUTH. Her (true) introduction to the show was deciphering the finer points of translated Greek! I mean - this is why I love Ruth, but yes, I KNEW YOU WOULD LIKE RUTH. Oh, my Jesus, the fact that Harry goes to Ruth of all people in 2x10 with regards to Tom - which, in some sense, MAKES SENSE, but in other ways is totally, utterly irrational (he spends most of the season thinking she's a crazy lady!). And honestly, there is no reason for Ruth to be sitting in on the interrogation of Christine Dale, solely because you know Harry looked point-blank at a C.I.A. dude and said that if my analyst can't sit in, Britain walks away entirely. SO THEY AGREED.
But look, she thinks, look at me now. I’m still here. And at the end of the day, that’s really all that matters.
That's so Tessa. She wins because she survives. For relative values of "win", of course, which is all you get if you are a spy.
(The moral of Spooks: DON'T BE A SPY.)
Ruth! She's so interesting, because, like, on the one hand, Ruth is totally not that important. She is an analyst on secondment, and her boss thinks she's kind of nuts. But, on the other hand, she's so important, and it's because of love and loyalty and because she's all these things that spies aren't, and because she gets to have emotions, and everything that should make her weak, but instead makes her indispensable.
I think it makes sense that Harry goes to her, because a) well, at that point, it's either her or Sam and b) she's Ruth. With everyone else, (thinks Harry and Tom and the rest of them) you have to worry, but Ruth is safe, because she's not going to hurt her people
( ... )
(I should probably warn you ahead of time: JAMES STEELE IS AN EVIL RUSSIAN BUSINESSMAN IN 4X08. Just, you know, heads up. Yes: accent and everything. IT'S SO RIDICULOUS.)
Sometimes I like to think about why and how it was Ruth came to be a spy. THERE'S NO REASON. She just... ended up one. LOVE IT. AND - that unimportant importance, yes THAT is why I ultimately love Ruth, I think. She fills that "meanwhile, this is also an OFFICE that FUNCTIONS" role, whether OFFICE is place where spies work and FUNCTIONS is protecting the country from evil. Come hell or high water, Ruth and Harry are there, defending the country from evil and all forms of tyranny, from here or abroad. And - just, yeah, SEASON 4. I feel like then I can properly revisit unimportant importance.
(EVEN THOUGH I INTELLECTUALLY KNOW IT WAS A CON, AJSFHAKJFA "HE'S MY BOSS, AND I LOVE HIM, AND I'M HAVING HIS CHILD" MAKES MY INSIDES GO !!!! EVERY TIME. Ruth! You crazy actual spy, you!)
i think the most telling thing about Why Ruth is the Best Person To Love Them All is when she is totally in love with the guy they have under surveillance, and it isn't sad or pathetic, it's just that Ruth pays attention to the important things about a person, and genuinely connects.
Tom and the ocean was like the end of The Bourne Ultimatum except lamer. Which is appropriate since Tom Quinn is basically Jason Bourne except lamer. I already like Adam better even though he's a total toolbag.
Ruth pays attention to the important things about a person, and genuinely connects.
