"I can't pee with her staring at me!" aka why Percy Jackson was awesome

Feb 13, 2010 01:23

Saw The Lightning Thief tonight with mysticfushia, da_widget, and a couple of other friends. We were probably the oldest non-parents in the theatre, which was awkward for like .5 seconds.

It'll probably come as no surprise, but I loved this ridiculous movie. Yeah, the plot was nothing like the book and there was some other issues with it, but overall? It captured the ( Read more... )

I think I pretty much agree with all this~ I wanted Annabeth to be smarter, but she was at least badass. Also, wanted more backstory and gods, yesssss. BUT. GROVER. YES~

I guess I really didn't notice that Annabeth had been dumbed down too much - she was still the one solving everything (after it happened, of course) and she knew her stuff when it came to the monsters and the mythology. One of the reasons she might've seemed dumber because Percy was coming up with the battle plans - like the reflection bit with Medusa - and she didn't have to lead him through like she did in the books. She didn't get as much screentime and speaking time as the boys did though, so that probably didn't help anything either.

Yeah, maybe that was it - she didn't lead Percy like she normally did in the books. So it was probably less of a dumbing down of Annabeth and more of a... smarting up of Percy? XD;

smarting up of Percy? XD

That was pretty much what I was thinking. The first time he was like, "I have a plan, guise!" I just sat there and thought, "In what alternate universe does Percy Jackson come up with plans?"

Good points.

The lack of dramatic moments was my only real complaint about it. I liked Annabeth's "Hi, mom." but there should have been so much more after all that. All the demi-gods being bitter in varying degress could have been excellent material.

And the scene after Percy woke up in camp could have lasted longer as he sort of adjusted to what he was seeing.

I know it's a lot harder to get character moments in movies where books can have whole pages for internal monologues but Chris/Titley should have done better on that front if they were going to make their own relationship cues for the movie.

If this movie gets a sequel, they really need to get a better screenwriter.

I agree; they're definitely going to have to dump the screenwriter for the next one. I don't know why he decided to cut half the stuff he did - although I think some of it may be the fault of the movie editors because I'm sure a good chunk of scenes were cut out. He did write some good scenes, but the dialogue was pretty crappy - I have a feeling all of Grover's good lines were Brandon improvising.

Definitely shot out at him in my post in haters. "Craig Titley - you suck. :("

But still, yeah, it was an awesome movie (TOO EXCITED TO SEE LOGAN ON TUESDAY BTW), but I'm still fairly disappointed with all the stuff they left out D: Even if PJO might bomb like all the other failed books-to-film HP-replacements. And oh, Seaweed Brain.. My Percabeth heart twinged just a little.

The screenplay/dialouge was just so cringeworthy, and now that you mention it, it does seem like alot of Grovers lines were Brandon improvising.

Grover/Brandon and Logan/Percy were my favorite parts though(:

My reaction vlog is going up really soon, like in a couple of minutes, and my opinion meshes with yours, pretty much. Except a bit more on the negative side. Lots of good discussion, though!

Not gonna lie I haven't even seen the movie and am just spoiling myself completely but this sounds like it may be worth my money. I've been holding off seeing it because I was worried that despite the cool trailers I'd be disappointed. But so far everyone's seemed to really enjoy it.

♥ Also, Logan has ridiculous chemistry with like every character, I swear. And by every character, I mean mostly Jake Abel; holy crap, we're about to be invaded Percy/Luke shippers.

This would so not be a problem.

No, more slash would definitely not be a problem. ;)

I think you'll enjoy it. It's a fun, silly movie, regardless of whether or not you've read the books.

Hi! Directed here from your comment via cabinthree.

Just had to say that we pretty much wrote the exact same reaction/review post. All the way down to Grover's 'I'M YOUR PROTECTOR'-ing forever.

I love the canon hardcore, but put it aside, and the movie is actually a pretty enjoyable adaptation based on the book.

They really could've cut the "protector"-ing bits down; that was probably the only part of Grover's character I didn't like.

But I agree, it was an enjoyable adaptation. As long as you can keep the two universes' canon seperate, I really think you can enjoy both!
