I don't know if this will help, but you have to be really, really bad to fail a fourth or fifth kyu test. I doubt that will happen to you. And you're smart enough not to compare yourself to the sandan candidate.

One of the most depressing things about this stage of my career is how low the standards are I'm being held to.

I compare my performance to the 2nd kyu students, because they're the next available level. The population of non black-belt students is pretty low.
