“Estel, what are you doing?”
The little edain looked up from where he was huddled in the corner, barricaded underneath every cover from his bed. “I don’t like the storm, ‘Dan.”
The elf crouched down next to the boy. “It won’t hurt you, Estel. Come, climb back into your bed and sleep. It is late.”
Thunder cracked as Elladan finished speaking and Estel jumped, quivering. His eyes blinked at the elf, wide and frightened.
Elladan sighed. “Estel. You cannot stay here all night. Adar would not be pleased. Would you like some poppy juice to help you sleep?”
Estel’s face screwed up in disgust. “No! That stuff’s nasty! I think -“ the rest of his sentence was lost in a mighty crash of thunder and Estel hurled himself onto Elladan. The elf looked down at the edain and said briskly, “All right, Estel. Up on the bed and I shall tell you the tale of Elbereth and the Thunder Giants.”
“You mean it is giants that make the noise?” Estel sniffed, clambering onto the bed willingly enough.
“Aye, brother. They are playing at nine-pins, you see, and that is the thunder, when the pins fall. Now, long ago when the world was new, Elbereth came to Manwé…”
The boy was asleep before Elladan was halfway through the story. Elladan leant down and pulled the covers snugly over the little form, leaning down to drop a kiss on the boy’s temple. “Sleep, Estel. The rain will be gone in the morning.”
