Walking Dead Fic Thoughts

Mar 06, 2012 17:19

I was incredibly bored in class today while my professor droned on and on about something unimportant and dull. So I did what any sane and awesome person would do: I thought about The Walking Dead and the fics I'm working on, which led to me thinking about fanfiction in this fandom in general, what I want to see, and what I think could make for ( Read more... )

Right now canon space is really, really tight. The group isn't focused on finding a place to stay right now, they have Hershel's farm, and one of the main focuses is on Randall, and to write interesting, compelling fic for this fandom, I think you have to escape this little world and expand it into your own universe.

I feel claustrophobic writing within the limits of current canon.

Trying to write within the confines of the farm is rather limiting. Out of the fics I’ve written, only 2 have been set while CDB is at the farm and even then the action took place elsewhere (Daryl off finding Sophia and Rick & Andrea trying to hunt). The farm has…stagnated the story, I think.

IDk if you’ve read the comics, but I hope they move on to the next location soon : )

That's to say, I don't want to read an AU where Rick and Shane are in a boyband with Glenn and Daryl and they fall in love and there's no zombie apocalypse. I'd like my characters to be recognizable.Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! What’s the point of a zombie-less fic in a ( ... )

Yes! I have read the comics, and though they get a little jumbled in my head sometimes, I do 100% remember the next location and oh please make them go there ASAP!

I hadn't really thought much about Rick/Andrea in terms of the show, but they've always been one of my dream pairings in the comics, so now that I think about it future fic with Rick/Andrea in the television fandom sounds pretty great. Adding your fic to my delicious feed yesssss!!

Yes! Bring on the cliches indeed!

Splitting up the POVs has so many merits, I can definitely get behind a good fic that does that.

I like where they're going with Rick/Andrea in the comics and hope the show manages to get there as well. I've written several R/A fics (One of the for the comic verse) and some gen (I had to do one where Daryl found little Sophia alive :) )

Very interesting thoughts! I'm also a Rick/Shane fan, so I'm always on the lookout for others!

I do like fics that stay close to canon. But I think the mark of a well-done AU is one in which the characters are recognizable. Even in that boyband AU. Rick, Shane etc. aren't who they are because of the zombie apocalypse. Yes, the setting of the show is important and not something I'd really want to take away, but a good writer could write the characters in any setting.

I usually like canon pairings, but for this show, I'm definitely most interested in Rick/Shane. They do have basis in canon, and for me, the Lori issue can be solved by OT3 - not sure if you like that though. It keeps making more and more sense to me, though. I understand the popularity of a pairing like Daryl/Glenn, since people like the characters so much, but to me there isn't enough in their relationship in canon to sell me on the pairing.

Anyway, sorry for the long, rambley comment! But you brought up some great points and I love discussing fic :)

I guess what I meant about the extreme AU is that people are the sum total of their histories and if you go into a world that's just *too* different, I don't know how I'd feel about it. That being said, I can see how certain elements of the guys could translate into any universe, and if it's well-written and compelling, I'd give it a go.

Dude, I was all about the OT3 for awhile, it's only because Lori has been seriously pissing me off lately that I'm not writing them =/ It's so disappointing.

"I understand the popularity of a pairing like Daryl/Glenn, since people like the characters so much, but to me there isn't enough in their relationship in canon to sell me on the pairing" Could not possibly agree more. Shane and Rick have so much chemistry, are on screen together all the freaking time, have tons of scenes where I think they are on the verge of getting it on, etc.

Pshhh ramble all you want! I love discussing fic too, especially with another Rick/Shane fan. I just love this pairing to pieces.

Well, I've certainly read the extreme AU where the characters are unrecognizable. Which is just the mark of a really bad AU. But, I see what you are saying.

Yeahhh, Lori's been pissing me off lately, too. But I really feel like Shane wants her AND Rick...and Rick...wouldn't ever leave his wife, would he? But, anyways, yeah. I don't write much but I would definitely have a hard time writing Lori.

I love Rick/Shane SO much. Which is interesting because I really didn't at all until S2, but now I retroactively love all of their scenes together...the flashback scene of them in the hospital from TS-19 IS SO EPIC if you slash them. I love it :)

When you get your Shane/Andrea piece done, I would absolutely love to read it.

I've written some fic but mostly just one-offs back in July of last year for flash fiction month. I've got a Shane fic that I want to write but I'm still working out the details in my head.

I utterly despise OC stories (for the most part) because they seem to be the same for the most part. I love Daryl so I'm going to Mary Sue myself and make him love me. Which is fine - a lot of those seem to be younger writers and they're just sort of feeling their way into fanfic. I just don't want to read them.

Oh god oh god the dreaded Mary Sue blechhh. OCs are necessary to some stories, duh, like if you're writing about the characters running into other people on the road, or writing about their past and want to use an ex flame to show something about the character's history. But the Mary Sue is just, dear lord, keep that shit in your own head. That's what daydreaming is for

I really hope my Shane/Andrea pans out because there is just something about them that clicks with me. That being said, there's some other stuff I'm working on first, so I hope I don't lose steam eeeek.

Exactly - those OCs are fine. The Mary Sues just make me want to cry!!

There's another thing that irritates me. Every fic I've ever read that has mentioned that scene in the cop car between Rick and Shane says something about "the pull-out version." It's POLITE! Not PULL-OUT! Oh my dear God, he's using a Southern accent!! We talk like that down here! *headdesk* That just crawls all over me, you know? I mean, what is a pull-out version even?!

Sorry about that. *steps off soapbox*

I agree completely - Shane and Andrea just work for me. I'll send some of my dteam your way - I'm not using it. My characters seem to have taken off for parts unknown. *grumps*
