There is indeed seemingly a desire to portray this conflict as the civilised world versus the uncivilised, Good versus Evil, the free versus the persecutors, etc... All such rhetoric does is provide populist support for the deployment of overwhelming force plus divert any focus away from the shades of grey that in fact shift around the underlying issues. This ideological censure and reductionism is something I highlighted in that piece I wrote about a while back, but I don't own the copyright as yet to be able to quote from it as such. There is a threat that should not be under-estimated and that threat must be neutralised. Still, I believe that the only productive future we should envision is one wherein US - and Middle Eastern - egocentrism gives way to a more sustainable and righteous global consciousness.
