‘I suppose it’s because I want to be remembered for something other than what happened during the war,’ he said uncomfortably.
Her big, brown eyes smiled up at him. ‘Or your sweet teaching methods.’
He grunted again.
Hermione took his hand in hers. ‘Harry said that you’re the bravest man he ever knew. You are more than what you had to do up there,’ she said, pointing up. ‘You’ve been the headmaster of this school under the most difficult of circumstances, and people I’ve talked to who were students then know that you spared them as much as you could.’
*
She squeezed his hand. ‘You’ve been an outstanding headmaster for as long as I’ve worked with you. You’ll be remembered for that.’
They reached the edge of the courtyard. A carriage would take her into Hogsmeade, where she would catch a public Portkey to London’s International Floo Hub.
He levitated her trunk onto the back of the carriage, fastening it in place. Hermione put her smaller bag inside, but she didn’t get in. ‘I can’t thank you enough, Severus.’
‘I’m entirely self-serving, remember.’
‘And here I thought the reason you were doing all of this … is because you love me.’
*
He managed not to blink, but it did take him a moment to collect his thoughts. ‘You wouldn’t have said such a thing if you weren’t already sure that I do love you.’
She tried, and utterly failed, to look sheepish. ‘I suppose you’re right.’
‘Don’t try to be Slytherin, my dear.’
‘You’re Slytherin enough for both of us,’ she replied, her smile broadening. She opened the door of the carriage.
‘I’m not through with you yet,’ he protested, stepping between her and the carriage. ‘Why haven’t you said any of this before?’
‘Do you remember the conversation we had?’
*
He stiffened. ‘About Lily.’
She nodded. ‘I’d always thought that you still loved her. You’d loved her for sixteen years after she died. You said you’d always love her. I didn’t know if you had ever … if you could ever love anyone else.’
Severus took her hands again, looking at their intertwined fingers. ‘I always thought that my heart died with her. But I gave up those memories, and there were gaps where something used to be. Gaps,’ he murmured, looking into her eyes, ‘that you fill a little more each day.’
With a whimper, she flung herself at him.
*
Though startled, Severus immediately surrendered to Hermione’s kisses. She clung to him, overwhelming him with her taste and smell for several minutes.
Finally he said, ‘You’ll be late.’
‘Come with me,’ she whispered.
‘No.’
‘Please. Come with me,’ she repeated.
With effort, he pulled away. ‘If I come with you, our first stop will be our last stop, because I will not have any inclination to leave you. Nor will I let you leave our bed for any reason.’ He tilted his head, so he could nuzzle her neck.
She purred as he tasted her skin. ‘I see your point.’
*
The bell in the clock tower pealed. ‘Oh, I am late,’ she gasped.
‘You’ll be fine,’ he reassured her. ‘Public Portkeys never leave on time.’
Hermione smoothed down her hair, even as she leaned in for another, much briefer, kiss. ‘I’ll miss you, Severus. Please write to me.’
‘Of course I will. Send your notes along, and I will keep them organized for you.’
She beamed, her lips swollen from his kisses. ‘I love you.’
‘And I, you. Have fun.’ He helped her in, kissed her again, and added, ‘Come home to me.’
She nodded, and the carriage drove away.
