Severus burst into their living room and sank onto the sofa.
Blood was streaming down his cheek and beginning to crust around his jaw. Alarmed, Hermione hurried over and knelt beside him.
She touched the back of his head gently. It, too, was sticky with blood. “Severus,” she said, “ what-?”
“This man said the nastiest things about you...” he said viciously, “about us... about...”
Hermione arched an eyebrow. “So you dueled him?”
Severus looked away. “I shouldn't... I mean... It wasn't...” and then, in almost a whisper, “Yes.”
Hermione couldn't help but smile.
