The bitter January wind blew relentlessly, the forlorn figure bent into it. Determination painted across her face, she battled forward. She needed to get to his memorial... she needed to say the words that had haunted her since the final battle.
Two pairs of eyes watched as the young woman battled onwards; one grey and one black set.
Her tears were audible as she neared the black monolith.
The black figure inched forward, his companion held him back.
“Wait, Severus!” Lucius hissed.
Hermione fell to her knees, tracing the inscription with her gloved fingers.
“Professor Snape... Severus, I’m so sorry.”

Severus sat opposite Lucius, swirling the amber nectar around the crystal glass.
“You knew... all this time, you knew she still grieved for me. Yet, you said nothing.”
“You were adamant that she was better off without you.”
“I didn’t know... I never thought.”
“No, that’s just it isn’t it, Severus, you didn’t think. You believed that she would forget you, you didn’t trust the depth of Hermione’s feelings.”
“I have to see her, tell her I survived.”
“You need to be careful, Severus.”
“I need to see her, Lucius, as surely as I need to breathe air to live.”

He bided his time; waited for the perfect opportunity. The day the invite for the latest Ministry fund raiser ball arrived he knew that was his chance.
Lucius took him to Paris to purchase new dress robes. He started to take more interest in his appearance. On the eve of the ball, he paced the manor like a caged tiger.
He hid in the shadows, waiting, watching, and hiding.
Her appearance stole his breath.
After taking a sip from his glass he strode determinedly from the shadows.
“Severus!”
“Hermione, I’m so sorry,” Severus whispered his arms encompassing the tearful witch.
