I love my Kindle. I also just have the wi-fi one, and unless you're planning to be somewhere without wi-fi for an extended period of time I don't think the 3G one is necessary.
That said, a lot of libraries are now lending books for the other e-readers (Nook and Sony) but not the Kindle. Supposedly it's coming but it's something to keep in mind. And not all Kindle books are lendable, which irritates me as I would love to be able to share my books.
I second all the Kindle comments. My Grama had an different kind of reader but it was basically a tablet and too complex for just books. I bought John the wi-fi Kindle for Christmas and have essentially stolen it.
