"You're not gay by any chance, are you?"
Jack took a deep breath, shifting a little in his seat. "That's... complicated."
"Well, uncomplicate it," the Welshman said, not taking his eyes off the road. "We've still got a bit of time yet."
Jack rubbed at the back of his neck thoughtfully. "I guess you would call me bisexual. Or maybe pansexual would be a better term, I think."
"I would call you?" Rhys echoed, flicking his glance over to look at the Captain for a few seconds. "What do you call yourself?"
Jack shrugged. "Jack."
They both shared a laugh at that, silence slipping in between them for a few moments. "That's not all that complicated," Rhys said, pushing the subject. Jack was a huge part of Gwen's life -- well, they all were, her coworkers. But Jack was here and talking and Rhys was going to get as much out of him as possible. "I mean, just about everybody's bi or claims that bi-curious bollocks nowadays."
The Captain chuckled. "You people and your labels, honestly. It's almost adorable." Rhys looked over at him again in confusion and mild insult, but found Jack grinning fondly back at him. "I'm stepping out with this guy," Jack continued. "Sort of. I think."
"You think?"
The questions were flustering the American, making him talk. "Also complicated." Jack waved a hand distractedly. "You met him yesterday. Ianto? Cute Welshman in the suit?"
"The sarcastic bloke that sat next to me?"
Jack nodded, looking out the passenger window. "We... had this thing, you know? No strings." He laughed a little. "You know how that sort of thing goes, I bet."
Rhys nodded a little. "You got attached."
"Like a fly in a web." He laughed again, leaning his forehead against the pane. Rhys looked over again and was struck by how young he looked like that. Sort of like a lovesick teenager. "Then I screwed it up and betrayed him. Betrayed all of them, really, but him most of all. He's given me a second chance -- been out on a few proper dates and such -- but he doesn't trust me yet. Can't blame him, to be honest."
"Y'love him?"
Jack gave a soft smile, still gazing out the window. "Yeah."
"That makes me feel better," Rhys said, adjusting his grip on the steering wheel. "Gwen fancies you."
The Captain took a deep breath, sitting up properly. "I know." He reached over to pat Rhys' shoulder comfortingly. "But she picked you, Rhys. Don't forget that."
"You don't -- ?"
"No!" He laughed a little. "I like her, I do, but she's not my type."
Rhys let out a sigh of relief that he didn't know he'd been holding in. "And Welshmen are?"
Jack winked at him, making Rhys burst out in laughter again.

Tosh and Owen were staring at Ianto and Gwen, wide-eyed pictures of shock and surprise. Both of them were lovely shades of crimson -- and both for very different reasons.
"I'm going -- going to go get Rhys a danish," Gwen stammered badly. "He's a bear on an empty stomach." She turned on her heel and ran down the alley, leaving Owen and Tosh to give Ianto the bug-eyed look.
"I'm sure Jack didn't realize he had his comm on," Ianto said, looking away from their gazes, "and I'd appreciate it if we all acted like we didn't heard a thing."
"Like I'm gonna forget that anytime soon," Owen started, and Tosh elbowed him in the stomach hard. "Right. Didn't hear a thing. I'm gonna go keep lookout for Rhys and Jack, they'll be here soon."
Toshiko raised herself up on tiptoe to give Ianto a quick hug as Owen left to go streetside. "I'm so happy for you," she murmured in his ear.
Ianto was blushing again when she pulled back. "Thank you," he murmured quietly.
She patted his shoulders fondly. "Okay. Deaf and dumb."
He nodded, hands shoved down into his coat.
"For the record, I was rooting for you over her."
"I know. Thank you."
