Notes: a quick drabble of a what-if :) pretty much inspired by THIS COMMENT, randomly!
The question is one of those ones that really shouldn't be asked. The MC is motioning furiously, trying to get the girl to SIT DOWN and the cameras need to stop rolling but everyone has their cellphones out anyway, this is too precious to miss.
Robert and Jude haven't moved. Jude's leaning forward, with his elbows on the table, and Robert's doing that thing where his arm's supposedly on the back of Jude's chair but everyone knows it's just an excuse to touch him. He looks over, the question in his eyes.
Jude's going slowly red, from the collar up - he looks at Guy, at Rachel, at Susan, anyone who can possibly bail him out of this. But the brave, brave girl is still standing, waiting expectantly, and the whole crowd has hushed.
And besides, Robert's got that look in his eye, and Jude knows exactly what it says - Well why the hell not?
He tries to tell himself this isn't any different from telling every interviewer on the entire planet how much he looooves Robert Downey Jr and how delicious he is and how much chemistry they have. He doesn't actually know why they haven't realized that he's serious, yet.
But now, they'll know. If Robert kisses him, right now, even if it's just at a fan's request, they will know.
But Robert's standing up. Guy's looking fucking pleased, because he loves controversy but more importantly he likes dicking with them, and even Susan seems on the brink of laughter. He can hear her in his head, oh honey, it had to happen eventually. And Robert's smiling.
So he follows. He almost knocks his water bottle over but Robert saves it, and he mutters a quick 'thanks', though he doesn't feel thankful in the slightest. He tosses the crowd one last desperate look - please, please, save me from the truth - but then he closes his eyes and the world falls away, because Robert's kissing him.
And kissing him, and kissing him. His knees buckle and he melts into it because he has to, and they steady themselves against each other - decide that yes, yes, that closeness is nice and draw in tighter and Rachel and Ryan have got nothing on them. This is a kiss for the books. This is a kiss for the centuries.
Later, he'll be mortified. The tabloids will go crazy and Jude will panic but this time, he won't be alone. Robert is different, he knows Jude, he knows how to handle him and what to do and maybe they'll disappear, maybe he'll pop up at some function with Suze on his arm and everyone will go, Oh, well. It was just Robert Downey Jr. He always does the craziest things.
It'll blow over. He'll crash at Sienna's place again, start that dry tinder of a rumor mill. Because he can't let anyone know.
