Mark is really grateful for Robert, sometimes.

Oh, it isn't on purpose. Robert does his thing, and even if it was for someone else's benefit, he'd never own up to it. He does what he does because it's what he wants to do, and he won't let anyone else steal the glory for that, not even at the price of appreciation.

But Mark appreciates it, anyway. Because everyone turns their eyes in Rob's direction, no matter where he goes, and Mark can just fade into the background.

He does feel a little jealous, though, and it's for the strangest things. That Robert can waltz around with Susan on one arm and Jude practically on the other, because he is that good, because he has that much charisma and magic and no one questions it, no one ever thinks he shouldn't deserve it.

Because he does, really. He deserves every little bit of what he's earned.

But Mark tucks his hands a little deeper in his pockets, shifts a little farther away from his nameless date and closer to his co-stars, and wishes for the one thing that would make this night perfect.

"If I went, I wouldn't be able to keep my hands to myself," Hans had murmured in his ear just that morning, a cup of coffee in one hand and the other curled around and tucked into Mark's back pocket. It was his partner's favorite place to be, wrapped around him like an octopus, and Mark always felt a possessive little thrill at that.

"That's no excuse," he teased right back. They both knew Hans was busy with Titans and he wasn't important enough to need to be promoting Holmes, but that didn't change a damn thing, it wouldn't make Mark miss him any less.

He nuzzled deep into the crook of his lover's neck, eyes closed, breathing in his familiar scent, as if he could take a little piece of him along, if he could only breathe deep enough.

Mark thinks of this now, as he's pulled into a line and the cameras are flashing, and he tries to smile. He really does. But he feels out of practice, and he can't help the knowledge that the only one who ever really sees him smile is half a world away.

He catches Robert's eye, over Rachel's head, which is definitely more of a testament to Mark's height than Rob's. The star has a winning smile, of course, ear to ear and brilliant, near blinding.

He meets Mark's eyes, though, and for a tiny, tiny second, he falters.

The smile is back. The cameras can't hold a candle to it. And then he moves, he slips out of the line and grabs Jude and Guy's trying to pull him back, trying to get a handle on things, but Robert's doing what he does best.

Distracting the world, so no one will notice Mark Strong.

In the ensuing chaos, he reaches in his pocket and flicks open his phone. Let's spend tonight on top of the world, the text reads, and when he looks up and catches Guy watching him with a knowing stare, he can't help the genuine smile that spreads over his face.

Because Mark is really grateful for Robert, sometimes.
