"...How do you not know what 'primal' means?"

From anyone else, it would've sounded like an insult, but Silena seemed genuinely curious, no more. Clarisse sighed and flushed red anyway, she was embarrassed at herself, more than anything. "There's a lot of words I don't know, okay? I never did well in school and I never wanted to." She hated more than anything else to look bad in front of the one person who's opinion mattered, but after a moment of silence, she chanced a look. Silena was twirling her pen between her fingers and staring off into space.

Clarisse blinked, then waved her hand in front of her girl's face. "You in there, lady?"

She started, then laughed. "Yes, yes. I was just thinking - well, none of us did very well in school, did we?"

Clarisse cocked an eyebrow.

"I mean, besides Athena children and what-not," she clarified, waving a hand vaguely. "I bet you know as much about fighting as I do about fashion."

"Well yeah, probably. But I couldn't tell you the names of the bones I've broken," Clarisse muttered, dubiously.

"But you know how to break them. I mean, on other people. I don't know the technical terms, either, but I know what looks good." As if to prove her point, Silena reached up absently and pushed an unruly tuft of Clarisse's hair behind her ear - and miraculously, it stayed. "'Primal' is like - instinctual, or fundmental. Like our animal instincts, or how us godly children innately know things that our parents do, sometimes. Primal urges. It's like a basic need."

Clarisse, who had been watching Silena's lips and honestly not paying much attention at all, nodded slowly. "Yeah," she murmured. "I think I get what you mean."
