Sally didn't go to beaches anymore. It wasn't out of spite, or anything like that - but it made her heart do funny things, and sometimes, if she found herself looking out over that beautiful, glittering expanse, she feels like it would be all too easy to fall in love all over again.
She'd always known there was something different about him, even when they met in the most inane of places - the library, the corner store, the record shop. He always seemed surprised to see her, then embarrassed, then fiercely charming. She let herself be swept away.
But she loved the ocean. That was the problem, she always had, but out of that deep wellspring the love for Poseidon got twisted and tied in so deeply until one day she'd realized it was one and the same; she'd always loved him, ever since birth, only now he had a name and a face and other very attractive bits that were difficult to ignore. So she stopped trying. And, for a while, it was perfect.
Now, though. Now she couldn't see the ocean without seeing him, and she couldn't see him without loving him, and that way was a path to trouble and hardship she no longer needed in her life. She wasn't twenty-three and dazzled, she had a son and a husband (whom she loved very, very much, though not in the same way) and this wasn't a storybook, or one of the legends she studied, that spoke of love conquering all. When she'd known who she had fallen for, she knew all of him, and accepted the fact that this would end.
But the ocean ended for her, too. She closed the door on fishes and sand and salt water and swimsuits and sunblock. She took the little dream she'd had, from a small girl looking out at sea for the first time, that she would take off for the waves and never look back, and locked it carefully away. The only ocean she was allowed to love was that which shone from Percy's eyes, and that, she told herself, would have to be enough.
