The first book of the year...

Kiln People by David Brin (458 pgs). It's a hard sci-fi book with a little pulp detective feel. In the future, people can make clay duplicates of themselves to either take care of grueling tasks (like going to work) or to live out extremely dangerous fantasies (no holds barred gladiatorial fighting), then at the end of the day your "dittos" come ( Read more... )

Oh no, I completely understand the delicacy of dough balls :-) We'll have to do some test runs on a couple styles (poor Tyler will have his fill of C&D) using baking powder, etc.

These had baking powder in them. But I think they needed something else. I'm not sure what.

What acid did you use? I know that just sounds wrong - some guys think the words acid and balls should never be thought of in the same context - but the powder needs a kick from something.

And I am totally snagging your icon, BTW...awesome!!!

I love the idea of the book... OK, I love the idea of sending my ditto out to work for me, etc. I'll have to check and see if it's in the library here.

Mmmm homemade chicken and dumplings. yum.

It's a pretty entertaining book. And if you wait, it might even be in a box...

Chicken, yes. Dumplings, not super yummy yet. Still need work.

avingail and I have an insidious plan to start a Caid choir. The idea is, we find people who are interested, decide on some songs to learn, and send out copies so people can practice wherever they are. Then we get together at some big event, rehearse together, and (ideally) perform together for the glory of Caid. Wanna help??

Also, your clay people sound like golems. Kind of like you get in Terry Pratchett novels.

Well they are certainly like golems, And there are a lot of golem puns as well.

And a Caidan choir? Seriously? **squee!** I am SO there!

What do you need?

Well, first, we need to get lots of people interested. Particularly, of course, tenors and basses. And then, we need someone who can direct. So far the best possibility looks like Cecilia Lightfoot, but she says she'd rather not direct the choir unless she's the only person we can find.

I was thinking we might get some LA-area singers interested by attending the next Bardic Circle Cecilia is hosting, which is apparently February 9th. We already got a ton of (very young, enthusiastic college-type) interest from the Shire of the Isles over the weekend.

So in case that wasn't direct enough, would you be willing to stand in front of the choir and wave do the arm-wavey thing?
