I've got to get this out now, while the memory is at its freshest. I really do wish I had a better memory--I'm terrified that this will dwindle to a vague happy haze all too soon ( Read more... )

*squee* I so wish I could've seen them this year, man. They didn't come close enough.

Later, I realized I didn't know the half of it, after checking a comment in a previous post, then consulting Google. According to Wikipedia, Anette and Nightwish have split, announcing it on Oct. 1 on Facebook.

I KNOW, DUDE! I flipped out, blogged out while you were MIA--like, last week I think? I'm very curious to see what they do next though. At this point, I almost don't even care who they get to sing for them--I just don't want the band to go away.

Tuomas's hair was whipping and splaying along the keys almost as much as his nimble fingers. And I'll say this right now: he's the hunkiest pianist I've ever seen. Wow. Now I feel kinda bad that, in my admiration of Tarja, I tended to almost forget about him and the other members.Heh--I saw a comment thingy on their website where a fan asked Tuomas if he'd ever accidentally knocked himself out headbanging-while-keyboarding, and he said, no, but he has gotten his hair stuck between the keys a LOT. However did I miss that blog post? *starts digging through f-list*

Agreed! Floor's a great fit--if there's any chance she can stay on and become a permanent member (or, at least, as permanent as a vocalist can be), I'll be quite content. :)

I can totally imagine some artistically-inclined fan drawing a cartoon of his keyboard eating his hair. XD

I think Nightwish as a band is more than the sum of their parts, which is why some of us are still peeved that Tarja's not with them anymore.Yes, yes, and yes! I'm trying not to dream about what it would have been like to listen to Tarja live, so I don't spoil the good time I ( ... )

"she tends to outshine everyone because you just don't hear a voice like that every day. Not just in metal, but anywhere"

Hmm, I'd have to disagree with that...x)

First of all, "not every day" means "not every day"--not that other good vocalists don't exist, but that they're rare, which is true.

Second, that girl's very good as well, but--no. I was talking about this with my mom the other day. (My mom is professional vocal coach, fyi.) That range, mezzo soprano, can sound a bit stifled and gutteral if you don't have the training to control it. Tarja has that training. She's let it go lately (there are parts of "Once" that aren't as up to par as "Wishmaster" and "Oceanborn") but there is a difference there. The girl in the video has plenty of talent, but she's forcing that range. It's an affectation, and it will screw up her breath support.

Hell, even Tarja has pitch issues when she sings live. I happen to think she's the best vocalist working in this particular genre, but she's still not perfect. I know most people probably won't even notice that kind of thing, but growing up around an endless number for singers-in-training makes it impossible for me not to. (I resent it sometimes, but there ( ... )

Ahh, this sounds AMAZING - BEYOND AMAZING - and I am so happy you had this experience!

I'm sad to hear Anette has left the band. Poor Nightwish has rather bad luck with lead singers, doesn't it? I remember being so worried the first time they had a singer switch (and I still really enjoy Tarja's voice), and relieved that Anette seemed to do well. (They weren't operatic anymore, sadly, but they still sounded like Nightwish, if that makes sense.) I hope whoever they find next upholds the integrity of the band.

I love Kamelot. I discovered them through their song "The Haunting" and it's been a marvelous love affair ever since. They wrote an epic fantasy with great characters that lasted through several albums (Epica, Karma, Black Halo), and I love the fact that they did through music what so many other artists do through books. I'm glad you enjoy them, too.

It was so cool to actually hear people in real life talking about music I actually have an interest in, instead of just reading YouTube comments or fangirling on LJ. ( ... )

It makes perfect sense! Especially since, no matter what, we have Tuomas to thank for the source of the music itself, even if it changes style. :)

Wow. That is incredible! I've been delving a little bit more into their music song by song, but now that you've mentioned that, I'm going to make sure I listen to the albums in the proper order. :)

Only Epica and Black Halo are actually part of the story, Karma came before that and is unrelated (and also not a concept album).

The story is based on Goethe's Faust, btw.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up.

Yes, that's rather hard to miss, what with the antagonist being named Mephisto.
