I'm a little confused that they think I should pay to return the juror affidavit thingy, but then again I suppose the municipal courthouse is less than a block away from Saturday Market, so hey. I wonder if I should go

Why the hung jury for a drug case? I don't undersand.

My dad, at least as of the time he stated that plan, is of the opinion that the vast majority of drug laws do more harm than good, and since a hung jury costs the criminal justice system more than an acquittal, it's more likely to draw attention to the problem. Also, expressing a radical opinion like that is a good way to avoid being chosen, which was his real goal, being self-employed and often unable to afford a day of civic service schtuff. I think if he were chosen for jury duty now that he's retired, he might keep a bit quieter about his opinions and actually go through with that plan of protest, but maybe not. I haven't asked him in a while.

Did I mention that Multnomah summoned me for a trial estimated to last five weeks?

They apparently give you one "defer your jury service for free" card, so I used that. Not really having a clue as to when a good time to spend five weeks in jury duty might be, I told them "um, January." They said okay and promised I'd hear about my next summons sometime in December. I don't know if I should expect that one to be five weeks as well or what. Ze wacky.

eh. if you can afford it (ie work pays for it), i'd consider it a great opportunity to impose your will on the American justice system :-)
