You should ask him. If he doesn't want you to know, or doesn't want to record it, or whatever, then you know you tried. And, if he does record memories and you never find yourself willing or able to listen to them, it's entirely possible that you could donate them to a museum or historical society of some kind.

That is scary. It sort of... to be cliche about it, rocks your world. We hear about--especially in the last ten years or so--all these school shootings and killings, but it never happens to us, right? My freshman year of high school (a year before Columbine), we had a threat. A kid, the quiet one that didn't really talk to anyone, had planned to stand outside the doors by the bus lane and open fire as school dismissed. He had this planned to the point where his "partner-in-crime" fessed up the day before and school officials found the would-be shooter's locker crammed full of guns and IEDs, Thursday, the day before it was supposed to happen. The students and parents found out about it on the news the next afternoon.

I was at my friend's house, in the kitchen. She was in the living room, watching TV and I hear her go, "Sar...why is our school on TV?"

So, that was fun.

And I understand your predicament about your grandfather's time in the war. My dad was in Vietnam and he does not talk about it. Ever. If the subject comes up, he ( ... )
