Part I:
-I liked it a lot! The episode was very Moffat-y in that it was all about twisty timelines and death fakeouts, but there were enough little character moments to keep me satisfied.
-River had some real character moments and stuff!! I remember emailing
_thirty2flavors not so long about how it was hard for me to feel~ River as a character beyond a plot point because we only ever lived her through the Doctor's POV. And it was SUPER ANNOYING to have this character show up and tell you she knows everything and say "spoilers" before flaunting off again. I was like CAN WE NOT JUST SEE ONE EPISODE FROM RIVER'S POV, WHERE WE KNOW WHY AND HOW SHE KNOWS ALL THE STUFF AND WE FEEL THE DOCTOR BEING A JERK TO HER RATHER THAN THE OTHER WAY AROUND. And 'lo and behold, we get that here and it was awesome. I wanted to punch Eleven in the face so many times for being insensitive and it was good to see the characters struggle with the difficulty of knowing information they cannot share. I especially liked Rory and River's quiet character moment. This was definitely my favourite episode for River. \o/
-I am blinking a LOT at her "we're moving in different directions" relationship with the Doctor, though. It seems like at either points in this timeline, one partner is going to know a whole lot more/have way more power than the other partner? And right now I feel a *little* uncomfortable that River knows so much more than the Doctor, but I suspect that feeling will go UP TO THE MAX when older!Doctor meets bb!River and is going "hey, come with me, future wife so you can one day die for me in a library." IDK I tolerate this relationship but I would be lying if I didn't sometimes give it the side-eye.
-I liked Amy a lot in both parts! She and Rory are super cute as marrieds and I'm glad most of the ~WHO WILL SHE CHOOSE~ drama is over and done with.
-What were Rory and Amy doing at the beginning though? Were they still on their honeymoon? Or were they back home and only travelling with the Doctor part-time? I WAS SO CONFUSED BY THAT.
Part II:
WHAT THE HELL DID I WATCH. I tried to get
_thirty2flavors to explain it to me afterwards BUT I STILL DO NOT UNDERSTAND. I grant that a lot of this stuff will be explained later on?? But with the time gaps and the total lack of exposition and the frankly bizarre scene cuts, I was just SO confused and unable to follow along with like 75 percent of it which meant that about halfway through I was mostly just bored.
I HOPE NEXT WEEK IS BETTER. I am excited to finally have something not penned by Moffat as, though he can be clever, he tends to use the same timeline tropes over and over, and I am so ready for a whacky space adventure that doesn't hurt my head.
