i don't know about the specifics of washington's proposed law, but we do have some laws here that i thought i'd mention. over the course of the past several years, many of the eastern massachusetts towns have barred smoking inside establisments open to the public (e.g., bars, restaurants). despite dire warnings that this would lead smokers to abandon each ban-town in turn, this has not happened. people just go outside to smoke. this is healthier for everybody (including the smoker, IMO, since the smoke so much more easily disperses outside) and if there's a prominently placed item for cigarette disposal, it's not particularly dirty (in terms of litter) either. from what i've read of new york city's famous ban instituted a couple years ago, the same thing has happened there for the most part

Another thought about a classification of business that would be problematic: What about private clubs, open to be joined by the public, such as the Elks and the Eagles? According to this law, any private club that accepts membership from the public for a membership fee is also included. No smoking clubs at all! Russ and his Muslim buddy have been talking causally about opening a hookah cafe, serving coffee and tea and selling shisha. Nope, illegal under this law. Not even a place you would go soley for the purpose of smoking would be legal! That, my friends, is absurd.
Thank you all for your oppinions and reasons. Very much.
In thinking about it carefully, I have decided to vote against this ban. Perhaps in the future there will be one that is better written that I can support, but there are so many holes in this one, I simply can not.
I appreciate every one who commented though, I know things like this can be sensitive. I needed some conflicting voices to help me decide.

Just FYI, this new ban would make that illegal, at least within 25 feet of a door, window, or vent.
