As you may or may not know, I’m currently working on my MA in Critical Media and Cultural Studies at University of London, SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies). If you're just looking for raw stats, I'm pretty dull- 100% English, 80-90 United Statesian, and I'd be happy to be part of the sample.

On the other hand, I suspect my daughter might be more what you're looking for- she follows quite a bit of anime (and is off to RIT in the fall in hopes producing such things someday). If her input would be more valuable, I'll ask her.

Both, either or neither. Let me know.

Sounds interesting. You might want to introduce yourself to thanatos_kalos. She's a longtime friend of mine from Buffalo who's now in the PhD program at Cardiff, and has been dissertating (or at least trying to) on the cultural influence of Doctor Who. My fannish practices don't change that much overall - I tend to critique, discuss, squee, and fic for fandoms of all sources in similar ways. Though there are certain fannish activities I do for animanga fandoms that I don't do for English-language fandoms, such as scan and translate (on occasion). This has less to do with source culture and more to do with source language, though - I'm a native English speaker and in English-speaking fandoms, so fanning on anything Japanese requires extra logistical steps, and I sometimes contribute. I also buy doujinshi for animanga fandoms and not for most Western fandoms, because dj don't really exist for Western fandoms (though nowadays I do look for Western-fandom dj, what little is out there ( ... )

I was born in the US, grew up in Mexico and my father only let us watch tv in english but I've also watched mexican movies and tv, same with japanese tv and movies, some korean movies and french, irish, chinese, etc. I don't know if I'm what you're looking for but if so I'll do what I can to help.

The first time you watched/read/listened to something produced by a culture whose material you had not previously fanned on, were there details you had to adjust to (e.g. narrative styles, character depictions, pacing, cultural references, etc ( ... )

Hmmm...As for source material v. fannish practices--I think I'm more "into" the characters from western shows (Stargate, X-Files) than the anime that I watch, though that's possibly because I started watching anime only more recently. I know it's not because they are cartoon characters--I was very heavily invested in G.I. Joe for a while, which was my first great fandom. I haven't sought out vids for anime and haven't read a lot of fanfic (though I participated in the AU BB and chose a Bleach story). I think I am drawn to the genres for different reasons, so what I like in the fandom is different. I watch anime because the art style is wonderful and the fan art can be amazing...and the stories they tell are either so unreal/fantastic (Bleach, Naruto) or so plain goofy/odd (Ouran High School Host Club, Death Note) that it would never work with live actors. And I want the stories that the SHOW is telling me, because they are so amazing and wonderful--I don't need fix-its, fillers, AUs, and so on in the form of fanfic; I'm happy ( ... )
