Fannish Browsing Tools, Part 2

Dec 04, 2007 17:26

I don't know if this is a good time to make this post, but then I don't know when IS a good time, what with all the hell and all the handbaskets. It's a list of some bells and whistles for LJ, LJ clones, and other fannish places. See also Part OneI use some of these a lot; some not at all. I am not endorsing any of them. As with anything you ( Read more... )

Hi, I came here through a recommendation from an LJ friend. I love the statcounter you suggested, but I have one question: How did you make it truly invisible in your post? I test-tried it in a post, and I still see a tiny box that links to the http://www.statcounter.com even though I chose "invisible" and did what you suggested in the comments.

Any advice?

It's my experience that the counters are invisible all by themselves almost all of the time; the span styling just keeps them invisible when they happen to go on the fritz. (And statcounter rules disallow changing the code, so I hope the span doesn't doesn't violate that, meep.)

Hmmm, I don't know off the top of my head, sorry. Is it happening on a post that I can see?

Here's a sample post. I don't know if it's just my home computer (it's a bit wonky these days) that the little linky box appears at the bottom.

Thanks for taking the time to help me =)

Ah, the problem is that the image has a border around it. The thing that actually does the tracking is a 1x1-pixel transparent gif, and linked images by default have borders around them. But there should've been a border="0" inside the img brackets to take the border off. Was that not included in the code you copied from statcounter? Weird. And yours is inside a div, too, which mine aren't. Huh. At any rate, it should look something like this:

I don't think I've mentioned this yet, but...

SWEET FUCK, LJWHO IS AWESOME>

Thank you for showing it to me. I was planning a pimp post of it for being one of the greatest fannish tools ever, and I had to come by again to thank you.

I bookmarked your thread on changing the text and color ... I'm not code-great, but I think when I have a chance to tinker with it, i might be able to figure it out. *hmph*

Still ... *glomp*

Haha, I KNOW OMG. I actually just backed mine up today. I had to reinstall greasemonkey several months ago, when I had only a few notes, and I lost them, which sucked a little. But if that happened today? It would suck SO much worse.

I'm not code-great, either. :)

Yay, the color and text changing was super easy.

Where are the notes stored locally? How can I back them up or transfer them to a different computer?

Oh yay!

He talks about it here. I think the profile folder varies by system. Then the individual file seems to be (and this is my own gathering, here), "prefs.js". To transfer to a different computer... I don't know. Would you just copy/paste the relevant lines? Because that file holds the prefs for a lot more stuff than just ljwho. I dunno.

LJ Addons is the greatest invention in the history of mankind, I kid you not. I've been using it for a year now, and I've gotten rid of nearly all my LJ-related GreaseMonkey userscripts. For instance, I added this entry to my mems without leaving the page (no script does that). I can load comments inline, collapse threads once I've finished reading them, and respond to entries and comments without leaving or reloading the page (and I can pick my icon and preview, unlike with Instant Comment). The only ones I have left are Style=Not-mine, LJ unusericon, LJ New comments, and LJ Instant Tag (which I think I might not need, but I get confused by all the options).

Of course it doesn't work on InsaneJournal, where I'm a support volunteer and could really use all the shortcuts. (;_;) So I adapted a few LJ GreaseMonkey scripts to work over there. brownbetty's version of Instant Tag already works at all the major LJ-clone sites without modification, because she's awesome that way. (^__^)

ETA (again): I forgot to mention YumYum! It's a bulk editor for ( ... )

LJ Addons IS awesome! I honestly don't know everything it's capable of, because I haven't played with it much. But I did just recently turn on the thread unfolder, after my script conked out on a page, and I think it's great so I'm gonna leave it turned on.

Heh, sometimes I see posts complaining about "omg there are tag clouds everywhere! What's up with the tag clouds?!" And I'm like, that's yer LJ Addons, working overtime to confuse you. ;)

One would think that it could be made to work on clones, though. Surely it's possible? There's the official journal, ljaddons, but I don't speak the language so I don't know if it's been discussed ( ... )

I would think so, but I'm not sure how that would work, given all the status bar icons and how much of its functionality is tied to the specific journal you're logged in as. I think they'd have to make a separate extension altogether. :(

What I absolutely love about the User Popup is the fact that it links to their friends page.

Hee! We are total popup opposites. I've never used the friends page link, and in fact considered removing it in favor of a 'send PM' (private message) or 'add friend' link. Thank goodness I read your posts!

what I love about LJ's official popup is the fact that it shows your friending status

I ♥ that too. I'm always going to join some community only to find I'm already a member! I wish I knew how to add it, but the truth is I probably know less about JS than you. I really have NO IDEA what I'm doing. D: I just got desperately frustrated one day not having my favorite LJ GM scripts over @ IJ and decided to open them up in Notepad to see what ( ... )

Yeah, you could totally change the friends page link to something else.

"I'm always going to join some community only to find I'm already a member!" Ha, that's me EXACTLY.

Thanks for the delicious recs! I'm in this dumb cycle where I don't want to just jump in and start storing links, because I don't have A System yet, but then the only way to build a system is to, you know, start storing links. I should just jump in. ;)

I'll post my changes in the next comment. It's mostly just changes to the styling, plus I moved it down a little bit because it was interfering with my ljwho.
