Fannish Browsing Tools, Part 2

I don't know if this is a good time to make this post, but then I don't know when IS a good time, what with all the hell and all the handbaskets. It's a list of some bells and whistles for LJ, LJ clones, and other fannish places. See also Part OneI use some of these a lot; some not at all. I am not endorsing any of them. LJ Addons is the greatest invention in the history of mankind, I kid you not. I've been using it for a year now, and I've gotten rid of nearly all my LJ-related GreaseMonkey userscripts. For instance, I added this entry to my mems without leaving the page (no script does that). I can load comments inline, collapse threads once I've finished reading them, and respond to entries and comments without leaving or reloading the page (and I can pick my icon and preview, unlike with Instant Comment). The only ones I have left are Style=Not-mine, LJ unusericon, LJ New comments, and LJ Instant Tag (which I think I might not need, but I get confused by all the options).

Of course it doesn't work on InsaneJournal, where I'm a support volunteer and could really use all the shortcuts. (;_;) So I adapted a few LJ GreaseMonkey scripts to work over there. brownbetty's version of Instant Tag already works at all the major LJ-clone sites without modification, because she's awesome that way. (^__^)

ETA (again): I forgot to mention YumYum! It's a bulk editor for del.icio.us, and it's made of every kind of win there is. I seriously don't know how anyone uses del.icio.us without it.

LJ Addons IS awesome! I honestly don't know everything it's capable of, because I haven't played with it much. But I did just recently turn on the thread unfolder, after my script conked out on a page, and I think it's great so I'm gonna leave it turned on.

Heh, sometimes I see posts complaining about "omg there are tag clouds everywhere! What's up with the tag clouds?!" And I'm like, that's yer LJ Addons, working overtime to confuse you. ;)

One would think that it could be made to work on clones, though. Surely it's possible? There's the official journal, ljaddons, but I don't speak the language so I don't know if it's been discussed.

Ooh! I'm using IJ User Popup and IJ Full User Info right this minute! (Well, ok, not RIGHT this minute, because I'm on LJ right now, but YOU KNOW.) They are super! That's you? HI. :D

What I absolutely love about the User Popup is the fact that it links to their friends page. And also their tags and memories and archive, but especially friends because that's the one I find myself looking for most often. And what I love about LJ's official popup is the fact that it shows your friending status with the other person. I wish those two things were combined... That the friending status could be included in the User Popup, or that a new script could insert those friends/tags/etc links into the official LJ hover thing. Maybe somebody who knows more javascript than me will tackle it.

Thanks so much for the Yumyum rec! I know nothing about del.icio.us. I mean, I have an account, but mostly I wander around going, "um, there are tags here? and bundles? I DON'T KNOW." But I'm watching deliciouslymad and trying to catch a clue, because I really want to start using it.

I would think so, but I'm not sure how that would work, given all the status bar icons and how much of its functionality is tied to the specific journal you're logged in as. I think they'd have to make a separate extension altogether. :(

What I absolutely love about the User Popup is the fact that it links to their friends page.

Hee! We are total popup opposites. I've never used the friends page link, and in fact considered removing it in favor of a 'send PM' (private message) or 'add friend' link. Thank goodness I read your posts!

I ♥ that too. I'm always going to join some community only to find I'm already a member! I wish I knew how to add it, but the truth is I probably know less about JS than you. I really have NO IDEA what I'm doing. D: I just got desperately frustrated one day not having my favorite LJ GM scripts over @ IJ and decided to open them up in Notepad to see what was keeping them from running (I tried asking the original authors of the scripts to modify them first, but a lot of them seem to be MIA.). It's mostly just find-and-replace "insanejournal" for "livejournal", and changing some links and a lot of guesswork and pure blind luck.

For instance, if you installed the IJ user popup before Feb 12, the User Script Commands menu wouldn't work. And then I spent a couple hours randomly messing around with it and now the menu works, but I have no idea how I fixed it! O_o (I'd actually love to see the source for your modified version of the original Better User Popup, if that's okay? I wanted to do something similar to the IJ one, but I was scared I'd mess it up.)

del.icio.us is one of those things that makes *no sense* (it's so fugly! and what the heck are bundles?) until it EATS UR BRAINZ. I use Netlicious now when I'm feeling lazy, but YumYum is still my favorite. And I didn't even know about deliciouslymad ! *scurries off to join*

Yeah, you could totally change the friends page link to something else.

"I'm always going to join some community only to find I'm already a member!" Ha, that's me EXACTLY.

Thanks for the delicious recs! I'm in this dumb cycle where I don't want to just jump in and start storing links, because I don't have A System yet, but then the only way to build a system is to, you know, start storing links. I should just jump in. ;)

I'll post my changes in the next comment. It's mostly just changes to the styling, plus I moved it down a little bit because it was interfering with my ljwho.

Heh, well, I was going to paste it into a comment, but it's crazy long and would've taken like seven comments, so I just uploaded it here. It's just a txt file, not a javascript file.

:D

Oh, thank you! I'll give you credit (do you prefer "gnat" or "gnatkip", and would you like a link to here or somewhere else?) for any changes I make to the IJ version!

That is very kind of you! I don't need credit, though. If not crediting is going to make you feel just too awkward, or something, I guess it would be gnatkip, but really. All I did was fiddle with a couple little style things. :D <3

For the Better User Popups, I just added in some links to other LJ clones (provided that the user has the same username at each place, which isn't always the case).

popupText += '» LiveJournal
';
popupText += '» InsaneJournal
';
popupText += '» JournalFen
';

(Sorry for the repost; maybe i'm escaped properly now.)
