Understanding is good in the long term, but it rarely helps with the short term shock and pain. There's no easy way to prepare yourself for what you already know is coming.

You have a lot of inner strength, so I'm confident you'll be ok without letting the pain get in deep. Your heart is strong, grasshoppa. Let it guide you to a happ(ier)y place.
