I am karma's bitch...

I don't know what I did to piss off karma, but it must have been a doozy. Or maybe (I hope) karma is about to hand me a huge payoff, so it decided to get in its kicks now so I'd earn it... I don't know. Either way, karma has made me her bitch.

In the last week...

My boyfriend had the crap beaten out of him because 7 frat-heads thought he was gay ( Read more... )

On the starter motor, it could also be the battery or the battery cable.

If the headlights come on and aren't dim, check the battery cable where it connects to the battery. If it's corroded-looking, unscrew it and scrub it with a brush and put it back. (Alternately, some spray-on rust remover or a fresh warm can of coke will take care of it)

If it is the starter... You can totally fix it yourself. On most cars, the black battery cable goes straight to the starter motor. Just find the other end and there's the starter. They're generally held in by 2-3 screws and cost about $30 to get a rebuilt one from a parts store or salvage yard. You just unbolt the dead one and stick the new one in its place. It doesn't need any calibration or anything. (But do disconnect the battery first!) It takes like 15 minutes.

What she said...

(actually, check the cable at the starter, too - and don't forget to look at the motor ground cable too...)

I've replaced my starter before (in another car), so I know how to do it. The thing of it is though, I don't have any of my wrenches or other tools here, I don't have jacks to lift my car to unhook the bolts from underneath, they will NOT let me do car repairs in the MCAD parking lot, and at home, I would have to be lying in the mud to repair it. It's easier and cheaper for me in the long run to just have the mechanic replace it. It's not the battery, because I scrubbed it all out with a metal bristle brush built for such a matter, checked the wires, the terminals, and the battery itself. All are live. Because of my one click, I'm pretty sure it' the starter...
