Things That Made Me Happy Last Week, Week One-Hundred-Sixty-Eight

  • For April Fool's Day this year, Google Reader announced a rewards program based on how many items users have read...except it wasn't entirely a joke, and it was later announced that they would actually be sending gout patches. I completely forgot about it for several weeks before unexpectedly getting my own (awesome) patch in the mail on Saturday. ( Read more... )

My only disappointment that it wasn't Spartacus was solely because I'd like for the waiting on that title to be over, but I've waited decades so a few more months won't hurt too much. I'm not sure that Spartacus would fit comfortably on two discs anyway. Besides, it's nice not to have to wait twenty years or more for the complete score to this!!!

Besides, I think Giacchino wants to see if these sell so he can talk Disney into letting him release a CD of his now Oscar-winning score from Up.

The eventual release of Spartacus might be one of those releases I buy despite knowing precisely none of the music, just because so many people say it's so good that I'll probably not be disappointed. That line of thinking got me the 2-CD version of The Wind and the Lion not too long ago (and a few things I've still not gotten into, but still). In any event, while I can understand those whipping themselves into a froth about the prospects of each new announcement being Spartacus, since it's fairly common knowledge that it's coming in grand fashion relatively soon they shouldn't have much longer to wait.

Anyway, I'm reminded of our discussion of the II and III expansions the other day--and while I know there's more action music coming to supplement an album that was already bursting with it, I hope the quieter moments (more of ( ... )

Don't buy the score for Spartacus without having heard it! Rent the movie, it's a great story with an exceptional cast, fantastic production values and a landmark score by Alex North, arguably his magnum opus.

It's generally considered the "thinking man's epic" (in that way, it bears resemblance to a latter-era North project Dragonslayer, which was a "thinking man's fantasy"), and its dry wit and interesting politics (the "nice" senator is a corrupt individual whist our primary villains are convinced of the purity and morality of their actions) balance out the depictions of the slave army, which can at times border on the corny. This is a phenomenal film, and if you don't get a tear in your eye for that one scene (you'll know it when you come to it), you should seek professional help ( ... )

Well, now I certainly will! It's too bad it wasn't caught in my web five years ago, when I noticed my college's DVD library and started catching up on lots of classics--Ben-Hur, various Hitchcock films, etc.
