I agree with all the above comments for his story being about comedy and the tones.
And i think above all that we have to realize that what Finn asked for is not uncommon. There are many people out there that pray for things like the things he did. Its not him being selfish, its him being a teenager. I mean people pray for good test scores and for the person they like to come talk to them. It might not be a good reason to pray but a lot of people do it, it just happens that Finn was the only one in this episode to do it so it stuck out more.

ia. I was amused by the moments he was praying to a sandwich, I must admit. But I did feel as if there was a gloomy undertone to it.

I think you summed it up perfectly by saying that he never understood what it was to have true faith to begin with. It's very alike many others, who believe so strongly when good things occur in their lives, but are so fast to doubt when bad enters in.

The LMR performance was a sign of how betrayed he was. It was truly saddening to see. Finn's innocence will sometimes cause him pain, I feel. :(

I really came to appreciate his innocence about things in this episode. It's just so charming. He can be a bit stupid sometimes, but I think it's always wonderful to see people who are genuinely so sweet and endearing about things. And I hate whenever he's crushed because of it and it does break my little heart to see him hurting because of him looking for the good in people (which may explain his friendship with Puck, his relationships with Quinn AND Rachel - trying to find, and seeing, things there that other people don't see).

As many problems as I have with the writing and characterization/development on this show sometimes, the one big thing I CAN say it has going for it (in my opinion) is that, in most cases, the teenagers ARE acting like teenagers. They're not these grownups stuck in high school - the act and behave like most teens I would've known in school.

I totally understand where Finn was coming from (and I am NOT a Fin apologist). Asking for banal things is easier than for the big stuff, because if it doesnt work than is not as a big of a deal. Is always, always harder to pray for things that really matter because once you put in God's hands you cant go any higher.
