Lingering Olympic thoughts.

While I didn't have huge issues this year with NBC's Olympic Coverage. I have realized that there is one little annoying thing that is still sticking with me. I noticed it first with one of the Women Skiers. "This mother of a two-year old..." and with a skater "...had a child last year...". I felt pretty annoyed that having a child was ( Read more... )

I noticed and thought about that, too. I think they mentioned it in the case of the skier because it's much more demanding, physically, to become a mother than it is a father. (Well, unless he's really talented in the sack, and she has a really exceptionally easy pregnancy, but generally even then. [j/k]) And with the time off that she would have had to take from training, PLUS the Olympic demands of a two-year-old on its mother aren't really all that compatible with the demands of an athlete training for a gold medal. And in the case of the skier, wasn't her husband also her coach? No word there on who might have been watching the baby, but obviously they have some help from Grandma & Grandpa or they have a very trusted nanny. I thought it was pretty amazing that she could take that much time off, have a baby, and be back in top form in time to compete in Vancouver, actually. That's pretty impressive, and physically impossible for most people. She's amazing!

I, for the most part, have written off the olympics

Once it became a professional athlete competition it didn't really matter any more

The same skiers go from olympics to a professional competition in several weeks
The same hockey players go back to their pro teams
The same basketball players go back to their pro teams
ETC......

The Olympics used to stand for something pure in athleticism and now it is pure commercialism
I am waiting for them to allow sponsor stickers on uniforms of all the participants so they can look like Daytona stock cars
