“Owwwww!” Adam smiled, rubbing the spot where My Pretty Pony just trotted across his forehead. Two year old Hannah sat on the floor between his legs, laughing and swinging around another dense rubber toy. “Careful Sweetpea, makeup can only cover so much.”

The other pony went airborne and Adam deftly caught it, handing it back to his daughter.

Kris entered the family room and set down the phone. “It’s all set; she’ll be here on Friday.” He sat cross-legged beside his husband and daughter and was immediately initiated into the how-many-times-can-I-hit-daddy’s-face club. Her Papa was the charter member.

“Your dad and Daniel don’t mind giving her up for the weekend?”

“No, they understand this Mother’s Day is special. Besides, Mama hasn’t seen Hannah in person since the adoption became official.”

“My mom’s coming Friday too.”

“I know; she’s meeting Mama at the airport and they’re arriving together.”

“Those two together again. What have they got up their sleeves this time?”

Kris gently caressed Hannah’s blond curls as she bounced her toys on the carpet. “Don’t know but it worked out well last time.”

Adam nodded. “Sure did.”

Kim and Leila had been responsible for bringing Hannah into their sons’ lives. The two young men had tried twice to become fathers and both times ended in tragedy. The loss of their son Jonathon at birth had devastated them and their moms decided adoption was the answer. They took a huge chance initiating it without asking their boys first but they knew in their hearts it was what Adam, Kris and Hannah needed.

If it weren’t for those beautiful women, the Allen-Lambert house wouldn’t be full of giggles and toys and dirty diapers and frilly dresses and almost too much love for the walls and roof to contain.

As a thank you, Adam and Kris had invited their moms for the weekend. They’d planned on taking them out to dinner and showing them how much their love has meant to them. Kris and Adam believed actions went farther to show love than material things but they’d decided to let Nanna and Grandma spoil Hannah as much as they wanted for the weekend. Living out of town, Leila and Kim didn’t get to see her too often, although Leila had seen her more as San Francisco wasn’t as far away as Conway, Arkansas.

If the ladies wanted to spoil Adam and Kris while they were at it, the boys wouldn’t object.

Leila and Kim hugged like the old friends they’d quickly become since their sons married. Arm in arm, they chatted about their lives back home as they negotiated the crowds at LAX and searched for Leila’s car. Once they were heading for West Hollywood, the conversation turned to their granddaughter.

“Everything is set for Saturday. The first appointment’s at 11 and the second at 3. If we’re on our way by 9, that gives time to shop before and fit in lunch between,” Leila said, smiling nonstop.

“Are you sure we should be doing this now. I mean, wouldn’t Father’s Day be a better time. They are men after all.”

“True but they also play another role in Hannah life, a role that could so easily be overlooked. It deserves recognition too.”

“You’re right. I hope our secret mission won’t be too much for Hannah. I don’t want to hand over a cranky toddler to her dads when the day is done.”

“What do you mean they’re already gone? It’s not even…” Kris searched for a clock, any clock, “9:30 yet!”

“I guess that wanted as much time with Hannah as possible,” Adam replied, chewing on his toast.

“But 9 in the morning? I mean, did they take the diaper bag, her favorite toy, snacks…”

“Baby, calm down. They’ve both been through this twice. They know what’s needed for a day out with a toddler. They are MOMS after all.”

Kris plunked down at the kitchen table with Adam and reached out, confiscating his husband’s toast and taking a bit. Adam said nothing, retrieving another slice from his plate. “So, what do we do now? I mean, without Hannah.”

“Whatever we do when Lori’s working.”

Kris claimed Adam’s coffee too. “That’s different. We took the weekend off so we could spend time with our family.”

“I’m your family too.”

“I know, I know…” Kris commented absentmindedly, licking a dribble of coffee on the side of the mug.

He looked over at Adam who appeared to be fascinated by his tongue action. Blue eyes gleamed and Kris licked his lips. Adam’s hand settled on his husband’s thigh, rubbing and working its way up.

“They’re not going to be back until supper time,” Adam mused, hand moving farther up until he reached his target. “Lori’s taken the weekend off so it’s just us. I can think of several ways to pass the time.”

The mug hit the table with a thud. “You always have great ideas.”

The boys waited until the ladies came back before they fixed supper. As they suspected, Hannah was exhausted, asleep in her Grandma’s arms, so Kim took her upstairs to her room and Leila lugged in their shopping bags. Kris went off to fix a light meal and Adam helped his mom.

“Did you two buy out the store?” he joked, threading various handles through his fingers.

“Nearly. Can you take these bags up to my room? I have to, ah, get something from the car.”

“Anything I can help with?”

“No! I mean, thanks sweetheart but I have it.”

“Oh-kayyyy.” He gave her a puzzled yet amused grin and headed upstairs.

Once he was out of sight, Leila hurried to her car and popped the trunk, removing some more shopping bags and an oversized package. Where the heck was she going to hide it? It needed to go in her room but Adam was up there. Kris was in the kitchen so that room was out. She chewed her bottom lip and put her brain into overdrive. She just needed someplace to hide it until she could get upstairs.

Kim and Adam’s voice carried down to the foyer. Darn it!

Having run out of time, Leila slipped the bags and package behind a plant where the stairs met the wall then bounded up the steps to join them. She hooked an arm through her son’s, smiling and joining in the conversation. When they reached the bottom of the stairs, they turned towards the kitchen - away from the stairs - and diversion number two came into play.

“Oh my feet!” Still holding onto Adam’s arm, she lifted a foot and flicked the shoe off. She rubbed her toes.

“You two go ahead. I need to get my slippers.”

Kim gave her an odd look and Leila responded with a silent glare. “Oh, right, you were telling me you were breaking in new shoes.” Leila let go and Kim dragged him out of the foyer. “So Adam, I hear Lady Gaga mentioned you in an article again…”

Slipping her shoe back on, Leila once more gathered her stash and bolted upstairs as fast as she could. Everything fit under her bed then she headed downstairs and joined the others. Just as she reached was four steps away from entering the kitchen, she realized she still had her shoes on and ran back to change.

By the time she joined the others, coffee was waiting and sandwiches and salad were being passed around. Leila was sweating and panting a little.

“Mom, are you alright?”

“Fine Adam fine. Shopping just takes a lot out of me.”

“Since when?”

Kim came to the rescue. “So Adam, Kris, what did you two do with a day to yourselves?”

Sunday afternoon, Adam and Kris donned their best suits and their mom’s modeled their prettiest dresses. Hannah was wearing a new outift courtesy of her Nanna and Grandma. It was pale lilac with white lace trim and a bow around her waist. Leila had styled her blonde curls in pigtails and finished the look with white socks hemmed with more lace and black patent leather shoes.

They had a wonderful early supper at one of LA’s five star restaurants. Normally reserved for adults only, they’d opened their doors to families and gave every mom who enjoyed their hospitality a dozen red roses. Between two bouquets and Hannah’s toys, there wasn’t much room left on the table for their meal.

Kris was feeding Hannah chunky applesauce when he noticed something wrong. “What’s this?” He picked up the hem of her dress and examined it.

“Something wrong?” Adam asked.

“There’s a splotch, a pale pink splotch, on her dress. I think its…it looks like paint! There’s paint on her dress! The store sold you damaged goods,” Kris informed the ladies.

“Paint? Let me see.” Kim quickly took the fabric away from her son and pretended to check it out. “I don’t think its paint Kris.” She laughed nervously. “How could she get paint on her dress? It, ah, it looks like baby lotion. I think its baby lotion. Yes, it’s baby lotion. Mystery solved. It’ll come out in the wash.”

Kris didn’t argue the point. They finished their meal then headed back to the house where surprises waited in abundance.

They’d gathered in garden. The late afternoon air was warm and the fragrance of flowers floated on the breeze. The patio table was decorated with candles and had wine and fruit laid out for the adults and juice from Hannah. Adam held her close as she used her sippy cup while Kris got ready with their gift.

“Mama, Mom, we don’t know where to start. We are both so lucky to be your sons. You’ve loved us unconditionally and were there through the hard times….”

“The very hard times,” Adam emphasized softly.

Kris smiled sadly, thinking of Jonathon too. “We were at our lowest point when we lost…when our dream of having a family crashed in around us. It was your strength and determination that made our dream come true, that brought Hannah into our lives. There isn’t enough of anything we could give you to show how much we care, except maybe our love.”

Tears glistened in Kim’s eyes. “Well, calling her Hannah Kimberley Leila was a nice touch.”

Leila just nodded.

Kris rested a hand on Adam’s knee. “Well, we got you lifetime memberships at day spas close to your homes. Everything is paid for, whenever you need a little pampering.”

“Oh boys, that’s not necessary but thank you,” Kim exclaimed, getting to her feet and kissing them. Leila, still speechless, followed suit.

“And there’s one other thing,” Adam added.

“That’s more than enough sweetheart,” Leila was finally able to say.

“We would like you both to be her official go-to moms. As she grows up, she’s going to need a woman to talk to.”

“Yeah, there are some things we don’t think we can handle on our own.”

“Like her teenage years.”

“You have Lori,” Kim pointed out.

“True, but as great a nanny as she is, she isn’t a mom. She doesn’t have that experience,” Kris replied. “You have been the best moms in the world to us and we don’t want Hannah to miss out on having a mother.”

There couldn’t have been a better segway.

Leila excused herself and Kim took over.

“Do you two remember when Hannah’s biological grandfather interviewed both of you as part of the adoption?”

“How we could forget; I think it was easily the most nerve-racking day of our lives,” Kris half laughed.

“You can say that again.” Hannah finished her drink and wiggled to get down. Adam set her on her feet and holding onto the table, she stood on wobbly legs and watched the grown ups.

“Do you remember when he asked who would be the mother in this family?” They nodded solemnly. “What did you say?”

Kris looked to Adam. “I remember exactly. I said, ‘We may be men but we can take on both jobs. Hannah will have two parents and when she needs her father, she will have two and when she needs her mother, she will have two.’”

“You also said she’d be ‘doubly blessed’,” Leila continued, coming back with the large package in tow.

Kim picked up Hannah, moving her out of the way, and Leila handed them their surprise.

“Happy Mother’s Day Adam and Kris,” the ladies rang out together.

They stared at the large flat rectangle covered in silver and blue paper, completely befuddled.

“I’m missing something here,” Adam mused, shaking his head.

“Open it and you’ll get your answer,” Leila offered.

Kris held the gift steady on Adam’s knees as his husband unwrapped it. It was a large picture frame and immediately, their eyes filled with tears.

Mounted under a cream matte was a photo of Hannah in her new lilac dress. The world’s biggest and cutest smile covered her face; she already knew how to poise like a pro. Next to it was a poem, a saying, they didn’t know what yet - their sight was too blurred to read - but above it were her handprints and below it her footprints in pink paint.

“That’s what we were doing on Saturday. Lee took the photo and Cassidy knew someone who did lettering and could mount everything in one day. Read the letter; it’s from Hannah.”

Adam wiped his eyes and looked at Kris. “You want me to?”

Kris held onto his arm and nodded.

He cleared his throat. “Dear Daddy and Papa. I don’t talk too well yet so Nanna and Grandma are helping me. They know what my heart wants to say.

“Thank you for making my favorite food. Thank you for making me the best dressed little girl in West Hollywood. Thank you for making me laugh. Thank you for drying my tears. Thank you for singing me songs. Thank you for all your hugs and kisses. Thank you for loving me.”

Adam’s voice cracked and he couldn’t continue. Just like one entity, Kris picked up effortlessly where his husband left off.

“Some people say a mommy is the woman who carries you in her tummy. I say a mommy is the person who loves you, cares for you, and would do anything for you. You are my Papa and Daddy. You are my Mama and Mommy.”

That was it; neither man could continue as the tears took over. Their moms finished it for them.

“When I’m older and can talk for myself, I know I will say all of this again and even more,” Kim recited.

Leila concluded. “I’m the luckiest little girl in the world to have both of you in my life. Hugs and kisses, Hannah Allen-Lambert.”
