New Orleans Day One

May 17, 2011 16:42

One of the first things I saw when I stepped out of the airport was a dragonfly. Since then, I've wandered around Treme, which is gorgeous and highly photogenic, seen and photographed two (yes two!) Banksy pieces, been hooted at by an out-of-season frat boy strayed from his pack, drank a fucking incredible cafe au lait from Cafe du Monde, doodled ( Read more... )

I am so, so happy for you. It sounds PERFECT.

(Weren't you going to hire a bike?)

I was going to hire a bike, and might still yet. Will see what P and I get up to :)
Mars, I just went for a swim in the pool, and...shit. So happy. Always happiest when in/near water, but this is perfect, so, so happy. There are two hotels, as you know - P and I are in the second building, across from 1244 (where the pool and reception is). No curfew on pool, can drink poolside, and just bloody awesome. Perfect.

P.S. In case you mistook me, I did not shit in the pool.

dying. for. a mufaletta. right. now.

Also highly recommended, breakfast places where as you wait for a table, you do so next to the bar where they're busy shucking oysters and handing them to you. I didn't think I could handle oysters before breakfast, but I was so, so, wrong.

Love the frat boy descriptors. Bring on the updates!!
(also, what is your hotel? I had a bad hotel experience there and ended up in the quarter with friends rather than where I had been going to stay (St Charles Guesthouse) but that was mostly cos of the permanent residents there (displaced people still)).

And how are things since Katrina? I was just watching the new season of Treme last night and wondering - how's the 9th? will you be going there?

I can highly recommend the Rock N' Bowl - we were there for New Year's and got the treat of Dr John just happening to wander in, but if you can find a gig happening there I'm sure it would be awesome whenever!

Muffalatas aren't too dissimilar from what I'd consider my favorite sandwich, so pretty tickled. We're staying at Rathbone Mansions, amazing hotels with lots of character, 2 blocks outside the French Quarter - good price, great rooms, slightly dodgy - just the way I like it :)
I loved Treme (only seen season 1), and cannot compare post Katrina since this is my first time here. But on my walks there has been a lot of building, painting, activity. This place just has an excellent feel to it. Kinda in love.
Will look into your recs, thank you! We're all planned for the weekend, but the next few days are pretty open and loose - also the way I like it. Xxx

P.S. I grew up eating oysters right off the rocks - there is never a bad time for oysters.

YAY I'm glad you've had such a great first day! I hope that swimming will (has?) ease(d?) your aching feets and knee. Looking forward to the updates and, in due course, photos!

Deb, swimming was AWESOME - I am so much happier in water than anywhere else on the planet. I have a feeling I'll be spending a LOT of time in that pool, with boozes and grinning. Xxx

I can see you loving this city. Not only is it vibrant and filled with character, it can also use the tourist dollar. Plus it's a big foodie city - and high on seafood - and in a way, reminds me of home. The only unfriendly people here are the tourists, really.
