Stuff Ya Face

I think, in life, sometimes, there is nothing better than a well made soup or sandwich.

The sassbombamazoniangoddess classytart kinda dared me to post each day of this week as a purity test for my LJ rehab, so even though I'm tired and my brain is mushed potato, there is nothing so simple and rewarding-for-all than a question or two. Which are; 1. If there ( Read more... )

1 Probably cheez-its.
2 Mac and cheese, a board full of some of the finest cheese in the world, and cheez-its. And some good ass ice cream.

Soups:
pumpkin
cream of mushroom
cream of broccoli
tomato

I'm a Campbell's girl, obviously. I really don't know any of these designer soups people make. Would love to try them though.

Sandwiches: nothing can beat a well made tuna sandwich. At a company Xmas party one year I think we had grain bread (?) with sprouts, avocado, turkey, mayo, Swiss, and it was damn good. I remember liking many of the Wholefoods sandwiches, like the avocado chicken and the ones stuffed with brie.

And I can make burgers for a picnic. Cause I'm fly like that.

NO. Sandwiches = sandwiches. Burger = burger. America is being banned from the misuse of the word 'sandwich'.

Sandwich = two pieces of bread with shit in between.
Burger = two pieces of bread with shit in between.

What part of that don't you understand, woman? ::buffalo stance::

Square bread = sandwich
burger = round bun
therefore burger ≠ sandwich

Or at least, that's my antipodean view.

Sandwich. Difficult! I like a plain old buttered bread, ham, cheese and lettuce. Or toast, with bacon and fried mushrooms (breakfast sarnie, there). Another hot one - good bread full of seeds and bits, spread with pesto on one bit, goat's cheese on the other, with a grilled portobello mushroom in the middle ( ... )

See, I LOVE sandwiches, but my FAVOURITE is: fresh tomato, fresh bread, butter, salt, pepper. So simple, but it's the most comforting thing I could put in my mouth. Other than a hot water bottle.

I also love seedy bread. Not so easy to find around here.

Baguette = sandwich, yes. Your Christmas baguette wants to be my face's friend.

I don't know what your issue is with roasted carrots, but I am a potato-anything person. And yeah, I'm feeling like eating an entire table of what you just described, so I guess I'm in a (ghost) pig eating phase now, too. Hence this heavenly post.

Favourite soup? Either French Onion or Minestrone.

I've tried a lot of varying recipes for French Onion, but I find you just can't beat the good old Margaret Fulton recipe I've been using since the early 80s.

Simple and to the point. Jamie Oliver tries to fancy-shmancy his up with balsamic and other poncey crap, but it tastes like shit.

The only variation I make is thick slices of garlic, and I prefer to use my home-made stock when I can.

Sandwich? Hm. Ham, avocado, dijon, perhaps. Toasted salami, chilli and Coon cheese.

But really, how can you beat simple, old-fashioned curried egg and lettuce?

I love both French Onion and Minestrone - but since I came to America, those have been supplanted by the hideous sin of clam chowder. Which is weird, as I'm not a cream-sauce person (as mentioned above), but there's something so OMG about it - potato + seafood + butter. It's truly, truly addictive.

Your sandwiches also sound good. Salami is my favourite deli meat, and its best friend is cheese. There's something so rustic about salami, cheese and pickled onion (Blue Banner brand, my most missed condiment next to Vegemite) on a fresh seedy sandwich, with maybe some sliced olives and a little chutney? I'm obviously meant to be Italian.

(Love egg curry sandwiches, but I also miss those tuckshop salad sandwiches with the beetroot and grated carrot - you know the ones, the giant towering salad sandwiches with slightly soggy white bread? Damn.)

I've been a lifetime hatehateHATER of pickled onions, but last year I discovered Blue Banner chilli pickled onions: I'm hooked on them (or at least, on thin slices of them).

The ham, avo and dijon sandwich MUST be made on fresh, crusty white Vienna, or even better, those soft white bread rolls with the really thin, really really crusty crusts that the Vietnamese bakers in Geelong make.

A fresh Vienna with proper butter and vegemite is also heaven. We've been known to consume a whole loaf in *minutes* like that. Sliced like paving slabs.

Salad sandwiches? SALAD ROLLS!

Seeeeee how fucking particular people are about their sandwiches? I am exactly the same. It has to be Just Fucking Right. And yes, Vegemite, on softsoftsoft whitebread with butter. YUM.

Peanut butter (crunchy) & honey, too. My Scottish nanna would make sliced banana sandwiches sprinkled with sugar - so bizarre.

One food for the rest of my life: I know it seems gross, but cottage cheese (so long as I could occasionally add pears to it). I'm tempted to pick something like lemon pie or grilled bratwursts, but if I pick this, it's something mild that I like that won't make me 500 pounds.

Death row: My dad's meatloaf, whipped potatoes with a half stick of butter, sweet corn on the cob, and lemon pie.

Favorite soup: I love soups with a lot of cream--baked potato soup, broccoli and cheese, chicken wild rice

Favorite sammich: I'm actually really fond of chicken salad, the fancy kind with grapes in it

Cottage cheese is good, but come on, really?

Jess, my favourite dessert = lemon tart. No shit. The ones at Julius Meinl are awwweeessssome *slobbers* I'm not really a sweet tooth, but simple, citrus-anything is heaven to me. Lemon. Tart.

I discovered chicken salad in the U.S. Have you tried the chicken salad at Gene's? I lived on that stuff (in their delicious rustic rolls) for about 3 months straight not long ago. Ooh, and they now have ready made pretzel sammiches!

all how I love pretzel sandwiches. Love them so much. There's a place downtown called Hannah's bretzel which has like $10 sandwiches with the meeting awesome expensive ingredients.

I have not tried the chicken salad at jeans, and I might be interested.
