Summary:
Juri was grateful for his birthday, but not really? It was sweet, but also bitter? Maybe Juri was just being over melodramatic.
It was late, after rehearsals and lots of photo-shoots. It was unusual, the day felt terribly long and the rehearsals even took place until this late, making him feel so exhausted, and the only thing he want to do right now is just to go back to his apartment, took a long hot bath then drifted off to sleep.
Once he arrived in front of his room's door, Juri reached out his bag to look for the key to his room, but as his hand wandered around inside his bag, he still didn't get the touch of the keys. "Eh?" He put his bag and carefully looked inside. He usually put them inside a small pocket of his bag, and there was usually no problem of him finding his keys. Then he rummaged through all of his pockets in his jacket, in his shirt, in his trouser... but he could only find papers and candies but no keys. "Fuck, where did I put them. It's late and I'm dead tired."
Hopeless, he reached out for his phone and about to sent a message to his band-mates, looking for a place to stay at least for the night, before suddenly Shin sent a message in the group chat of them 6.
Shin : Found this in the dressing room. Juri's?
(picture of a key with a cute blue bear keychain on it)
Juri : YES. MINE OMG
fuck I must have accidentally dropped it, today was pretty crazy.
Shin, mind to drop by my apartment? Pretty please.
(cute puppy sticker)
Jesse : You are cute when you beg lmao
Juri : Shut up
Shin : Nah, you want it, you come get it
(mocking sticker)
Juri : Oh come on
Shin : Srsly tho, I'm home already and you know it yerself I'm still not allowed to go out at night if not for work
Taiga : Here it is our big baby
Juri : Shit fine I'm coming over. Wait there
Reluctantly, Juri called a taxi and went to Shintaro's place. Even the ride there felt agonizingly slow. He looked outside the window, staring at nothing in particular. It was almost midnight already, but the city still seemed to be busy. Not as much people as it was when he headed home, but still plenty enough to make the taxi moved with moderate speed, unable to speed up like what Juri asked.
Long enough, Juri was almost there so he thought of sending a notification to Shin, just to make sure he's ready to open the door by the time he got there.
Juri : Shin I'm nearby
Juri waited, the text was read by 1 and no one replied. Not long after that he finally arrived at Shin's place, his text was read by 3 and still no reply.
Juri : Shin? I'm in front of your place
Hey
Anyone
Help
Yuhuu
I'm here
Hello
Earth to Shintaro
Dude
(various random sticker)
Hoku : You're annoying, just give him a call
Juri : Duh, sure ok.
Finally Juri called Shintaro, took it a while before he finally picked up, he must have gone asleep. "Oy, I'm here." "Yes I'm coming~ wait up," Shin replied almost immediately, pretty much not like he was asleep. Before Juri could think about it more, the door opened, revealing only the head of Shin as he peeked through, "Psst Juri, here."
Jur frowned, "What took you so long? I just want to grab my keys-- wait why are your home all dar--" Juri stepped inside, just about to say how everything was pitch black when suddenly the lights turned on, got too bright and had Juri instinctively closed his eyes.
"SURPRISEEE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY JURRIIIIIIIII!!!!"
Confetti popped, lots of loud exclamations, and took me a while for Juri to process, "EEEEH?" Shin pushed his back so he was fully inside, before the lights dimmed again, forcing Juri's gaze to focus on one light source that had just entered the room. It was a cake with 2 candles shaped 22 on it, held by his most beautiful band-mate, none other than Kyomoto Taiga. All the loud shouting now changed into a melodious birthday song, sounded much more better almost like a professional choir, as expected of a room full of Johnnys.
Happy birthday to you
happy birthday to youu
happy birthday dear Juriiiii
the room fell silent as the last line was sung by the pretty boy in front of him,
Happy birthday... to... you......
Juri could feel his chest tightens, feeling all hot and touched with everything in front of him. His eyes were a little bit teary as he smiles back to everyone in the room, particularly to Taiga who smiled so sweetly and said, "Come on birthday boy, make your wish."
Juri closed his eyes, stating his wish in his mind, then blowed the candle. "YEAEYAEYEYEYEYYYYEEE," the lights were turned on, and all the loud exclamations of celebrations started again. Juri took a moment to look around and kind of surprised to see there were more people than he thought, there were of course all his bandmates, then he saw the members of Love-tune, other Johnnys Jr, even some senpais like Fuma and Kento. One by one they gave him a hug, a handshake, or just a pat in his shoulder or his back, giving him words of celebrations and wishes.
The party didn't last as long as how Juri had thought though. As quick as it started, after a round of cake-eating and drinking, most of them already excused themself. Well it was not a weekend so everyone must have to work early, leaving only him and his bandmates not long after.
"Once again, thanks a lot guys, seriously I didn't expect anything, my day was extra exhausting I kinda forgot today is my birthday," Juri chuckled as he slouched onto the sofa, next to Yugo who had been sleeping soundly for a while.
"Yeah why do you think the rehearsal was so long for?" Hokuto plastered a smug smile, enough hints for Juri to finally understand his long exhausting day was on purpose.
"Really tho, you should know that Kouchi kept sulking behind," Taiga pointed at Yugo. "Yeah, Yugo said he couldn't keep up with the fake prolonged rehearsal but he ended up just playing along. Look at him now completely dead lol," Jesse poked Yugo's cheeks but he didn't even flinch.
Shintaro took out Juri's keys from his pocket, "And well you didn't drop this," he laughed then throwed the keys to Juri.
"Fuck you guys. Thanks tho."
"Well, so that's it. Sad to say but I have to wake up early so I need to go now," Hokuto raised on his feet, gave Juri last punch on his shoulder before saying goodbye. Jesse followed behind, wrapping his arm around Yugo's waist for some support even if he was still asleep, "Us too, see you guys tomorrow."
"You wanna stay over?" Shin offered to the the remaining boys, but Juri shook his head, "Nah, I'll go home. I need a hot long deep bath before sleep, you know." "Still amazed of how people manage to keep doing their personal routine even on busy days," Taiga said, "well then I guess I'm not staying over, I'll drive Juri home."
The road was not as busy so the ride was quick. Immediately after entering his apartment, he soaked himself in hot water, drowning in his own train of thoughts as he felt utterly grateful for everything he had up until this point
Even though he had a character of doing-as-he-pleases kind of guy on the stage, deep inside he was actually kind of melodramatic. He loved doing night routine like this, giving him some personal time and space to think. Evaluating his life, his feeling, basically everything. It felt good to know where you're currently standing at, and where you're heading to afterwards. Counting all the bless he had and feeling grateful for each and every little thing happened in his day was also included in his routine.
"I should give them a treat," Juri said to himself, "that's the least thing I can do to repay the favor."
The next morning, well not exactly morning since it was already 11 a.m., Juri came to the jimusho with a big grin in his face. "Guys, let's eat yakiniku tonight, my treat~" he said as he opened the door to the dressing room, expecting some happy shouting from his bandmates.
But instead of getting what he expected, he was greeted with a silence.
"Yakiniku? My treat?" Juri repeated his word, maybe they just didn't hear him. Still, everyone was looking at each other as if waiting for any of them to answer first. Juri looked at the youngest member who would definitely love yakiniku, but Shin scrathed his neck, "Man, this is hard. I'd really love to go but sadly I already had plans."
Yugo looked up from his book he had in hand, "I have an exam tomorrow, didn't had to study yesterday so I have to catch up and-- sorry." "College life is hard," Jesse added, his tone is somewhere between questioning and stating, Juri wasn't sure but that wasn't a problem. "I might be able to join but I can't 100% say I will." Jesse finally answered the questioning look of Juri's face.
"My schedule is pretty packed these days, but I'll try to fit some time," Hoku answered, but his expression was not that reassuring. The red-head looked at his last hope, who thankfully didn't dissappoint him. "Not having much to do today anyway," Taiga shrugged.
Despite all the boisterous birthday surprise he had last night, the rest of the day was pretty much the same. There were some coming up to him and wishing the birthday boy but, that's it. Then everyone back to their own busy routine. Well, Juri should understand the different circumtances of everyone, he should not expect much. He was just... lonely. To spend the day by himself with his usual mundane routine.
At last, it was just the two of them. Hoku and Jesse turned out that they couldn't make it, and Juri was about to cancel the plan but Taiga insisted, saying that he had nothing better to do. That was a lie tho, Taiga had been specifically clearing out all his schedule for the day.
"You look very miserable for a birthday boy. What's up?" Taiga asked, his right hand played with the hot meat in front of them.
Juri let out an awkward laugh, "Nothing, it just feels weird to eat yakiniku with less people. Look the meat is almost ready."
Taiga gave him an incredulous look, but he just silently picked up some meat.
There were some moments of unpleasant silence before Juri started to talk randomly about things like the weather, the meat, the rice, anything, then made lame jokes that he himself laughed at awkwardly.
"You know what Juri?" Taiga cut him off, placing his chopsticks down, staring right into his eyes, "there are just the two of us here. Seriously, no need to play hard and strong."
Juri bit his bottom lips, before all the muscles in his face relaxed. Pretty much obvious he just dropped the tough mask he had been wearing for the whole day.
Taiga waited.
Juri let out a deep sigh, before finally speaking his heart out, "I just... I don't know. I have a mixed feelings I couldn't identify what it is."
"You could. You just don't feel like it." Taiga urging him to continue
"Well, I'm happy. But I also feel... betrayed. By my own expectations tho, not anyone's fault," he played with the rice in his bowl, before continuing, "The surprise last night was the most touching birthday surprise I've ever had in my life. Just that... after all the love I got that night, I was kinda... expecting more. Like, I don't know, maybe spending the day together, or hanging out, or... doing stuffs," he shrugged, unsure of what he actually wanted. "I know it's my own fault for putting a high expectation that everyone will go with me through the day. I should've understood that they have their own life, their own business, their own priorities... but--" Juri left his word hanging.
Taiga sensed that Juri wasn't going to finish the sentence, so he tried to sum it up by himself. "It's not your fault. It's natural to want to spend our happiest moment with the dearest people."
Juri gave him a wry smile, "I'm actually not the kind of person who'd make a birthday celebration. Well, it's not bad to have a celebration, I did also celebrate birthdays in my family or with friends but, rather than throwing a feast, I prefer to just... wanting to, like you said, spend my day with my dearest people. How should I put it... it's like wanting a deep relationship rather than just a one night stand?" Juri laughed at his own lousy analogy, earning a whack from the older.
"Well yeah but you get the idea." Juri laughed, then staring down at his hand, "If I'm being asked of what would I want for my birthday, I'd say.. a companion? That'd be the best gift ever."
Taiga smiled, "I'm giving you one right now. Smile, stupid birthday boy. You should be very happy to receive your most wanted birthday gift from your most wanted person."
Juri cracked a smile, the most earnest one he had put on his face today. His birthday was indeed bittersweet, but it started and ended sweetly.
