Podcasts and project ideas

I'm not awesome at keeping my ipod up to date with new episodes of podcasts I am subscribed to so I tend to go from feast to famine. At the moment though I have a bit of a feast and I seemed to be in the car a bit the last couple of days so I've been catching up with all my favourite hosts ( Read more... )

I think the problem with a lack of decent female characters isn't the fault of people voting on lists - the problem is when they cast a TV series and make 90% of the characters male. It's kind of hard to have a 50/50 split on cool TV characters when 90% of them to begin with are guys.

Even if that's the case, and I would still argue that if we only get 10% female characters, there are have still been some truly awesome female characters in amongst them ... we're just right back where we always are with this discussion be it rock n roll, science fiction writers or TV characters. And I would say that part of it comes from those who write and cast - and therefore create mostly male characters - but also those who consume and don't notice or question what they are consuming.

Yeah, but if there are awesome characters among the 10% of female leads and awesome characters among the 90% of male leads, you're still going to only get 10% of cool female characters on the compiled list. That's less sexism and more mathematics in this case.

I'd be interested to see a list of top characters voted for by women and top characters voted for by men to see how the final list compared, actually.

And Zoe and Kaylee from Firefly /swoon

also Abigail Bartlett from West Wing...

I'm with you though on not wanting to go write a list. Partly cos I know I'd forget people.

Plus? Lynda FTW. I wanted to be her when I was a kid. And possibly when I was a teenager. And, you know, more recently...

First of all, oooh knitting podcast! Maybe that's what I've been missing. It seems like all my podcasts are about spec fic, but I do have other interests. Really ( ... )

I was just coming back to add Donna Noble to the list, but you beat me to it *grin*. I've been watching Dr Who for years and years and years (since the behind the couch days) and I think she's the best companion ever.

I have been watching Doctor Who for all of... three months or so. I'm currently trying to catch up with the new series, and so far I've only seen "The Runaway Bride" out of all Donna episodes, but I can't wait to get to the ones where she becomes a proper companion!
