National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

18 years ago today, a man walked into L'École Polytechnique in Montreal and killed 14 women. For being women. It seems odd somehow that my final for my Women and Sexuality class is due today. I really enjoyed that class, and though women have been punished for showing their sexuality over the years, it seems odd to have a sad day associated with ( Read more... )

Violence of and sort = Bad

HOWEVER.

In my own personal experience, I have been slapped or hit in a relationship argument. No, it wasn't ongoing or whatever but in basic definition, it's a violent act.

I didn't do that to them, so what makes that right?

It's a women want their cake and to eat it too, stems from equalness of the sexes, and this is an example.

It's not a question of Violence against women, its violence in general, it's just that violence against women makes for a good news story, over a man being beaten in a relationship.

This is an excellent example of how society likes to shove away evidence of violence against women so that it won't have to address the rampant misogyny in society.

On the contrary, a man being beaten in a relationship would make a great news story, because people like to hear about what happens when women are violent, because it allows them to perpetuate the myth that you have articulated so well.

If violence against women made for good news stories, perhaps there would be adequate and appropriate coverage, and perhaps then there would be much less rampant ignorance like this.

a good news story?? how much more ignorant can that comment be? violence against women is grosely ignored in the news media. violence occurs towards women more then men. this is a fact. yes men can be victims to. and that should be regonized. this does not change the fact that women have always been much much more likely to be the victims of mail violence, in many forms. i feel unsafe when i'm walking alone at night. i might be raped. men don't have to feel that way, at least not to that extent. as far as domestic violence, the social and income inequality often keeps women in abusive relationships simply does not apply to men ( ... )
