I knew Kate many many years ago in Philadelphia, as a good friend of good friends, and I definitely know about the disconnect between a lot of her writing (and speaking, and boundary pushing, and general intellect) and her general everyday warm sweet personality. She's definitely part of my top 10 people that I wish I had become friends with, but instead only admire from a casual distance.
Much as I like Kate as a person (I met her in London some years back) I find her approach that takes the view that there's only one way to be trans and it's her way a bit much to take at times.
Yes, I can understand that well. But one thing she did say in her introduction was "of all the things I got wrong . . . "
Considering she wrote a theory book 15+ years ago, even though her ideas seem outdated at times, she does still resonate with a lot of folks. So I'll give her that. But there is no one-size-fits-all. In fact, I will talk about that a bit in a locked post later today.
