Tutorial: How to Make Brushes from Images
Program: GIMP 2.2.6 (on Mac port)
Date written: August 20, 2005
So you'd like to make custom brushes from the little image packs iconmakers offer...what do you do? Below is a sample brush image (from
www.hybrid-genesis.net or
inxsomniax). Open it in GIMP.
Go to Image>Mode>Greyscale. Always do this! Otherwise it'll either not look right as a brush, or GIMP will tell you it can't be saved as a brush file.
Next go to File>Save As.... Type your file name. I like to put the maker's name then a sequence number, like "inxsomniax-01"; that way it's easy to give credit to the proper person in entries. For our example, you'd save the file as "inxsomniax-01.gbr" .gbr is the GIMP brush file extension. Once you've clicked to save it will bring up another box for titling the brush--this will show up in the brush preview box. I put the file name minus the extension.
Now once you've made 50 million brush files (or one ;)), you'll need to copy them to the proper GIMP brush folder. If you don't know where it is (like me with the Mac XD) or want to be lazy, create a folder in your documents with a name like 'gimp brushes.' Then, go to (in GIMP) File>Preferences>Folders>Brushes. Click the 'new' button (it looks like a sheet of paper) and then down in the folder listing box. It should create a new 'link.' Then go the 'browse' button and find your new 'gimp brushes' folder. GIMP will tell you to restart the program once you've added the link. Once you've added brushes to the folder, you'll need to click the 'refresh' button on the brush preview box--it looks like curling arrow on the right-side.
Any questions?
