Using Brushes

Hi guys, I'm relatively new to Gimp and I'm wondering what to do with brushes. I've downloaded some Gimp brushes from Deviant Art and put them in the right folder, but they aren't showing up when I go to use them. Do I need to convert them first? What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

They should be .gbr files and they can't be in sub-folders.

Have you refreshed the brush page or re-started GIMP?

Ah...that was the problem. I copied the whole folder, not just the contents of it. Now they show up. Thanks!

If you're using GIMP 2.4 they can also be .abr files (Photoshop brushes). Maybe this quick tutorial can help.

If you prefer, you canuse sub folders placed anywhere on your system but you must select your brush folders from the Preferences>Folders dialog or the program won't load them when it starts up.
