When I lived in London in 2005 (I was doing history research for a few months), I had an encounter with NHS. It was amazing especially coming from the American health system. I passed out on the street from a serious UTI and I actually considered not going to the hospital with the ambulance that was called for me because I was worried about the cost. It was automatic terrible thinking. Thankfully, I went and got antibiotics right away and the whole process and helpfulness of the staff was so wonderful. And it was free.
