I've seen lots of posts, here and on FB, about the tenth anniversary of 7/7. I wasn't living in London, or nearby, as I was during the IRA bombing campaigns of the 80s, but the sheer scale of deaths, the horror of a double decker bus peeled open like a sardine can, the stories of the survivors all made a big impact. I think that's absolutely the right attitude to have, and I wish it were one the US better imitated. In this country, at least, I sometimes look at what's happened since 9/11, and wonder if the terrorists managed to win after all.

We've had similar government attempts to monitor everything and forbid anything that is not compulsory. It's just that Brits tend to be very stubborn. Within hours of the bombing somebody set up a website full of images of people carrying banners saying "I'm not afraid". Sadly, it's gone now, though the BBC still archives a memory.
