Nostalgia weekend

Nov 27, 2013 00:50

Over the weekend there have been Anniversaries (plural). I haven't posted about them before, but thought I would now.

Under the cut for rambling and memories from Way Back When. )

A toast well worth making! I found a really good guide to the Five(ish) Doctors, BTW. Though it doesn't mention Barrowman's frantic attempts to hide a wife and two kids.

Useful! We went over that a couple of times trying to spot all the cameos, but I'm sure we missed a few!

I loved the use of Sean Pertwee and David Troughton. (Patrick had two sons who are now highly-respected actors in their own right, David and Michael. The grandson, Sam, has taken lead roles at Stratford. Sam's children have been fed and played with by my actress daughter. I'm within six degrees of the Tardis!)

One of my favourite bits was John Barrowman desperately trying to hide a wife and kids!

I loved reading about the way all of these events connected to your life.

Thanks. It's a year I remember very vividly. How can it possibly be that long ago?

I remember watching through the gap between the door and the frame too, though it would have been the later Troughton's in my case as I'm a child of the show born after it started. I think it might have been the Icccccccccee Warriots. Though the first plot I remember is The Silurians.

You are a mere babe in arms, I know. The Ice Warriors really scared my brother.

It's amazing what we remember from our childhoods isn't it? My dad wasn't around much as I was growing up, for various reasons, but I do remember that when I was 3, he took me to see Return of the Jedi, and we ate ice cream and watched The A-Team on Tuesday nights. I was very tiny at the time, so it's amazing that I have any recollection at all.

And I remember the Challenger shuttle blowing up, and a few other news things. But I have such visceral memories of being in the theater at age 3, and being scared of Jabba the Hut, and watching Hannibal and his men undertake crazy missions.

I remember being taken to see Disney's Sleeping Beauty aged 4, and being terrified of open fires for years after. (The witch always came every time there was a fire.)

It was a good bit of DW nostalgia wasn't it. I enjoyed the run up to it as well. It's amazing that it's still going but that's down to the genius of the regeneration I think - which you've summed up nicely :)

Thanks. It's such a part of the national consciousness, even for people who don't watch it.
