Um...ooookay. You know, I'm as spiritual as the next person, but I get very twitchy when folks start talking about "God's plan for every life, and true happiness is found in living His plan." Mostly because I hear my dad's voice in my head, and he always told me, "Do your best, follow your dreams, and most of all, be happy. That's what God wants most."
I find this sort of obvious allegory just plain tacky.
And what in hell do disobedient caterpillars who indulge in worldly activities actually do? The mind boggles at the concept of sinning caterpillars. And why is the centre of the tree an evil place to be?
They probably munch the leaves of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. As for the center of the tree, who knows? Maybe they're only supposed to be on the right side of the tree.
Everything else aside that sounds like an incredibly dull book. "Mommy, mommy! Read the one about the sinful caterpillar resisting the divine will of God again!"
I assume only a very converted family would read this to a child (poor little bugger) so the implication would pass them by, but you are right, of course.

I always thought that was sage advice.

Nope. It makes the sort of sense that is not.
