Being a spy would be far more entertaining than being a grocer. Maybe on par with being a fighter pilot.
I totally see Giles as an inquisitive and precocious child. Not sure I see Dad as being mean. I would think he would want to instill a little excitement if his son had no choice but to join the council.
Lol. Poor little Giles. Those two careers tell us how young he was. He had no concept of relative ambition, just two things that appealed to him, regardless of complexity or glamour.

I was thinking about this too, incidentally, the fact that there's a whole Watcher Council built around/for just the one girl in every generation.
