In a Blaze of…

Dust hanging heavy in the air choked him as he approached the police barrier. Everything rushed around him as he stood, silently watching. Firefighters did battle against the threatening flames. Officers and paramedics searched desperately for survivors. Giles knew they ( Read more... )

I always wondered if Giles was near-by when the council building was destroyed. Sounds like a good beginning to a full story.

I think it would have made a big impact on him, even if they weren't his favorite people.

Don't put ideas in my head. I already have too many stories to write.

The Council didn't seem they could lead and fight their way out of a paper bag, they were so clueless. I can't blame Giles for turning away. He was already in the fight.

Nice evocative moment. Well done. :)

With all their faults, you have to admit the council was a huge part of Giles' life. It's destruction and the deaths of all those colleagues would have hit anyone hard. I didn't see him turning his back so much as knowing there was more work to do and people he had a chance of saving.

I am glad the moment worked well for you. Thanks.

Of course it was, but I think by the time the Council blew up in S7, he was done with the organisation. He'd ignored Travers' call several times as seen in that scene before the explosion. I think by that time he was working as his own operative. There wasn't anything he could do to move the Council along, but there was work to be done and he was going to get it done. In that, I think we are agreed. :)

You're right. I forgot about the ignored phone calls. And, by this time, even though they had been waiting for the 'big one', they had stepped back from the front lines for so long that they didn't know how to really fight anymore. I did mean the 'Council's day of glory' line as something Giles would have thought ironically. But, also, he had buried so many people by then, it would have been too much loss for most people to handle. His only chance at sanity was to focus on the girls that were still alive.

I would say though that a couple more field Watchers wouldn't have hurt in Sunnydale. If only for babysitting and research purposes ;)

I love the potent imagery evoked by your piece as well as the fact that it speaks to how far Giles has traveled from his days at the Council.

Thank you. I do think he would have mourned. The Council was a huge part of his life and those were his colleagues. But, at that moment, there were other people he could still help save.
