Oh man. Yeah... it's like how sometimes I go to read comments on articles or blogs on places other than LJ and then instantly regret my folly.
I've been following the news in MA, in addition to my local ME stuff (because M has family there and we've both got friends, and well... snowpocalypse). We've already had at least 6 inches here from the northern storm system--which is our snowpocalypse pre-game. The "real" storm hasn't even arrived yet. Wheeee!
I think it's pretty smart that your Governor has issued a travel ban. It's going to be dangerous out there--and emergency workers need to be able to get to where they're going without dealing with some yahoo out for a joy ride. I mean, jeez, during the '78 blizzard some people were stuck on the highway for a couple days before rescue workers could reach them.
And, during Sandy, there were travel bans in NJ, at least in Atlantic County where my family lives.
Yeah, totally! I stayed off the road today because I can't drive in snow (thank god for my MS plates), and also, so dangerous! I don't understand the immediate reaction of people who believe that their rights are being infringed!
I didn't know that about the 1978 blizzard. Very scary! We won't be hit as bad as Boston or ME but we will get up to 18 inches! I'm just glad I don't have to shovel!
Yeah. M and his mom went out this morning to pick up a few last minute things at the market (primarily diapers for Henrietta--because the ones his mom got us yesterday sucked and needed to be returned). ((we usually use cloth, but she's so prone to diaper rash we use disposables overnight)). And they said it was pretty bad driving even then.
Yeah--the 1978 blizzard was pretty hardcore. Also, M's mom was telling me this afternoon that there was a little boy playing outside who got buried when the snowplow went by. He didn't survive. She's still haunted by that story 35 years later, which, I don't blame her.
I'm definitely excited to check out what the snow fairy brings to us. But in a safe and responsible way. Not going to be on the roads until they're reasonably safe to drive on. Won't be walking in the road unless it's one of the residential side streets that has no traffic this time of year (and then, only with safety vest and highly alert). Big Weather is fun--but not fun enough to risk your life.
trufax. I drove in whiteout conditions once. It was terrifying. It was Christmas night and I ended up stopping at a friends house and asking if I could stay there, because there was no way I could drive another hour to where I was going.

I don't understand why people think they want to drive in a blizzard. It's not actually fun.
